Brake/Clutch flush

Featured Replies

Hi all its been a while just curious about how to do a full fluid flush its well over due.

Brake and clutch.

How do a do it got a sealey brake bleeder for pressure bleeding just need advice thanks all.

The clutch is easy, remove airbox to gain access to plastic bleed nipple.

Brakes are a pain on the driveway, I would suggest you park nose high just in case a small amount of air is trapped in the calipers if parked tail high.

You can work on the fronts without jacking, just turn the steering full lock to the side you want to bleed for access from in front of the wheel.

The rears need jacking up and wheels off and even then it's a bit cramped.

Bleeding sequence is FL, FR, RL, RR.

Clutch can be done before or after, it's fluid feed is high on the master cylinder reservoir so be careful to keep the fluid level up so as not to introduce air in the line.

The brake system is fed from the bottom of the reservoir however do not get complacent with fluid level monitoring as air in the ABS pump is a trip to the garage to fix properly.

Other than that it's straight forward, use new/clean fluid, don't reuse old stuff, take your time to be methodical and keep things clean.

Oh yeah... use a good fitting socket and ensure it is fully located on the bleed nipples, apply steady torque to slacken don't just yank hard. If you use a spanner expect problems with rounded off nipples, you have been warned!

Thanks for the reply

So do a just fill the bleeder and bleed away or do a bleed the old stuff out first then put the pressure bleeder on thanks

Consult the directions for your particular bleeder.

The process of bleeding the old fluid out is to force it out by introducing new fluid.

You do not bleed the old fluid out leaving the system empty and refill with new.

That would leave the system full of air and necessitate lots of fluid and electronics to purge the system.

If you are at all unsure please enlist the help of a mechanical savvy friend, search for brake bleeding videos or pay a garage.

You can make a balls up if you aren't clued up, potentially leaving you stranded without clutch/brakes or driving a car with less than ideal brake performance.

On the whole it's not a complicated job just be methodical and think things through before you commit if at all unsure.

The reason I said it was a pain is all the scrambling about on the ground when you don't have garage ramps for easy access.
