Air con clutch

Featured Replies

Wife's Oct is making a noise so I was informed last night, had a look/listen this morning......sounded like the drive belt chirping at first but on closer inspection I could see what looked like the central screw on the AC compressor is loose.

Will this tighten up? Has it just come loose?.....I'm thinking NO!!

Anyone experienced similar ?

Thanks.

John.

It can be done up, but you'll need an air powered gun or similar to be able to do it.

Not sure I'll get an air gun in there!!

I think there's a bit more to it than that, but rather than changing the whole compressor, I'm pretty certain you can get a new clutch kit.

I seem to remember that is the nut came loose, the clutch wasn't working properly and was undoing the nut somehow.

If you do manage to do it up, then keep an eye on it as it might well pop off again.

The other thing to try would be a ratchet/torque wrench, but i don't know what the settings are for that bolt, so the air gun comment makes me wonder if you'd need loads.

(All you can do is find out by asking on here/looking for the settings)

You need to remove the inner wheel arch liner...5 minute job and then you can get the airgun straight on it...very common fault, and very easily fixed without the need to buy a new compressor/clutch. It only needs nipping up, so don't worry about torque settings etc.

Not sure about the octavia but the fabia uses a variable displacement compressor which doesnt have an external clutch, just a pulley.

I'm thinking maybe this might be what I'll need...... https://x8r.co.uk/products/skoda/skoda-air-conditioning-compressor-repair/air-conditioning-a-c-delphi-compressor-5n0820803-audi-vw-seat-skoda-repair-kit

Will get a better look over the weekend hopefully.

No mate...just an air gun...try it and see

That was certainly the issue on the MK1 and if you caught the bolt soon enough you were ok, but if not it was new plate or somebody would try and sell you a new compressor.

Not 100% it's that for the MK2, but worth checking with a proper A/C specialist if you're unsure. (Or the vendor of the kit)

MK2 doesn't have a clutch.

Used a battery gun but no use.....will get an air gun on it through the week, hopefully that'll have a bit more "GO" !?

Cheers.

You need an air gun for its speed. For some strange reason it's the only way the bolt tighten's up. If you do end up changing the pump, it's an easy job. Take of under tray, turbo intercooler pipe and it will come straight out the bottom. The hardest part is finding the right hex key to remove the the aircon pipes of.

Should be a T45 torx.
