Whining 4th gear on 2015 Octavia 1.4 DSG petrol

Featured Replies

I've just had the dealer carry out the first service and asked them to check out a gearbox whine.

It only happens in 4th, in drive or sport, is very unobtrusive, but always there, and only in 4th.

They told me "They all do that.  Its normal"

I thought only dry gears whine?

Anyone else experienced this?

Thanks

The old 'it's normal' get out of jail free card from a dealer. Gear whine is normally caused by incorrect meshing between the laygear and the driven gear. It can also be a gear shaft bearing or thrust washer even though it only happens in one gear. My knowledge of DSG boxes is not that good, but I suggest you ask the dealer to demonstrate it is normal, by driving another car of the same model.

My Octavia was serviced by a well known Skoda dealer and it was one of their mechanics who told me the whine is normal, so I took his word for it.  I couldn't say I didn't believe him and then ask to drive another of their cars, that's why I thought I'd ask if any other Briskodars had the whine.

Hi Stewart 7

I had same issue with my vrs 4x4 diesel dsg. I went to my local dealer parks of Hamilton a number of times, and I basically got the same answer as you, even though I had driven the demonstrator which was whine free.

I do beleave that the dealership don't want to start and investigate this issue, as it could be a number of things as moggy tech has said.

And they won't get payed for the investigation work by skoda.

The dealership would rather you just keep driving your car until it breaks-down.

Then they can say ooo the gearbox is knackered.

As for skoda customer services well that's another story.

I hope you get your issue sorted.

After a little research it appears that the most common cause is the inner race of one of the clutch bearings. For 4th gear, that would be clutch two.

A lot of auto boxes whine to some extent, DSG and normal torque convertor ones.

But maybe get a 2nd opinion.
