Wet carpets.... AARRGGHHH!

Featured Replies

Had wet carpets with no reasoning 4 years ago, stripped it all out, dried it off, and drove around with bare metal floors without ever finding out what caused it, so refitted ad haven't had a problem since.

Forward to this week, started to notice a musty smell, thought it was either a dog towel I'd forgotten or football boots, but pressed the drivers side rear carpet and it's soaking, water coming right through!!

So this morning I stripped it all out (which even with the jumbo box only took about two hours including refitting the seats & accelerator so it's drivable again... although I'd forgotten how bloody noisy it is without the padding underneath!! :D ), and ran a hose over that whole side, but couldn't get a damn thing dripping anywhere!!

Any ideas??!

I've read about the seals on the rivetted door cards giving way so I'll keep an eye on them, but I did notice that one area of trim right by the bonnet release has a natural cup shape behind it and that was nicely filled up with water, so that's where I'm concentrating my observations over the next few weeks. Other than that I'm a bit lost.  :dull:

Check the scuttle panel under the wipers too. Mine was badly fitted and letting water in.

Will do, cheers. Possibly an odd question, but how was it badly fitted and how/where did that affect where water came in to your cabin? Trying to work out what to look for, not just poking around in the dark at a black bit of plastic. :)

The trim is just push together with a seal clip around the circumference. Mine wasn't clipped in at the top so water could collect and seep under where it wasn't clipped in. I think from here it goes down to where the cabin filter is and then into the passenger footwell.

Thanks, I'll have a look. Gave it a wash this morning and there was water underneath the a-pillar trim and small splashes on the fusebox cover area, probably cos I'd given it a DAMN good hosing!! :) Hopefully, only the inner door seal... £38 from the stealer, fingers crossed.

(good weather for the next few days/week, can't be arsed to do it yet, especially as I've come off nights, so I'll be driving around in a tin box for a little while! Still, it's an excuse to wire in the four footwell lights and USB ports while it's like that I guess. :giggle: )

Got any little ones? Did someone just not shut a door/window properly?

Nope, it's tight as a drum. I've even got the Skoda/OEM wind deflectors so even if it were open a gap it wouldn't/shouldn't get in that way. Hopefully it'll be a nice easy on and I find a small hole in the rubber seal. Fingers crossed! :)
