Mechatronic Failure - a word of caution

Featured Replies

My 2011 1.2 TSI DSG-7 is a car with 41,000 km on the clock. I have only done 7000 km since buying it 13 months ago. It  lost all 2nd/4th/Reverse gears, so got it towed into our Skoda dealer. I received a call today to say that the Mechatronic unit was gone (1660 Euro) & that I may also need to have the clutches replaced (1390 Euro). Although just out of warranty, Skoda would not even consider going some way towards the acknowledgement of a problem......even after only 41000 km of driving - ie 'Skoda do not expect a DSG 7-speed to last beyond 41000 km???

My last 1.6 Petrol DSG(6) gave no bother over a 10 yr period - We (family) have all bought Skoda's for YEARS...but no acknowledgement of our custom/loyalty - not looking for a 'freebie', just a goodwill gesture...even a free service!

My family are all changing their cars over the next 24 months ( the plan was 3 Superb, 1 Kodiaq, 1 Octavia & 1 Fabia)...this is not going to happen now. Skoda should be ashamed of themselves - 'Simply Greedy'...not 'Simply Clever'!

Flood their social media sites with their response.

Facebook, Twitter etc. Email Honest John, BBC Watchdog and your equivalent of the Citizens Advice Bureau.

You might want write a letter to Skoda UK to express your disappointment and your loyalty to the brand, they may reconsider since its a known weakness in China and owners in China have 10 year warranty on their 7 speed dsg box.

Thanks for the responses - will get onto that!

This is one of the reasons I replaced my octy Vrs with another manufacturer. I'm just not impressed with Skoda anymore, bit sad really, the octy gave me 8 years trouble free motoring.

Isn't the 7 speed DSG under a recall in the US and china for problems such as the above....

Since the car is less than a reasonable age, I'd start action in a small claims court (Well the Irish version of) as that's a joke.

The car isn't of reasonable quality if it requires so much work after such a short period of time/distance.

Oh dear... another failure. I think VAG/Skoda's attitude to these is appalling. There are clearly problems with them but they just shrug their shoulders when one goes wrong and accept no responsibility.

Just a note on your trouble free 10 year DSG ownership prior to this... it was probably because that wasn't actually a DSG gearbox.

The 1.6 FSI/MPI got a 6 speed tiptronic gearbox which was a standard automatic with torque converter.

The World Wide Recall and Warranty Extensions did not include the UK / Europe because they are not in the World, or too near Germany & VW & Governments Agencies that do not bother, and let the VW Group dictate to them what actions they will take if they say 'Not Safety Critical'..

But the Service Campaigns do cover the UK & Europe.

so was there a Service Campaign Action required and done?

Synthetic Oil changed for Mineral, and a check done and a Software update for the DSG ECU.

*A letter sent to the registered keeper if the vehicle was one requiring this, or possibly requiring, or notification when the car was at a Main Dealers for servicing.*

How it was done in New Zealand.

Proper preventative Service Campaign including a New MCU.

IT IS NOT ONLY 2009-2011 FOR VEHICLES BUILT FOR EUROPE.

PS for those not noticing.

Dublin has nothing to do with Skoda UK.

& BBC Watchdog has not much to do with consumers in Ireland.

Although not directly related - i had a similar experience with BMW Mini some years ago just out of warranty.

I tackled Customer Services with information from the USA, whereby warranty was extended on HPFP issues.

Also showed then brand loyalty and full BMW Mini service history etc.

In the end - my persistence paid off; but it wasnt easy.  So stick with it.... and get the outcome you want!

also havin probs with dsg

could anyone clarify what oil it was that was changed as part of the recall - the gear oil or the mechatronic unit

Had mine done year or so ago and have asked the dealer - all they told me - transmission oil - leaves me none the wiser

mechanic friend reckons ot should have been the mech unit as it was meant to be mineral oil

would preciate if someonoe could give a definite answer

cheers

Ask Skoda UK Customer Services to send you the full gen on it.

After all you own the car, you are responsible for you and others safety with Maintenance.

(I have the print out as the Dealers received because i printed it off their system after so many Dealerships seemed to be doing the Service Campaign work wrongly.)

There was no Recall.  just a Service Campaign, or also known as a Skoda Secret Service Campaign.  Need to know basis. Loose lips cost lives.

(But do not advertise widely the Service Campaign as not Safety Critical.)

So the Mechatronic Control Unit should be checked. But how?

So Synthetic Oil filled at the Factory is replaced with Mineral Oil, & a Software Update is done, & a sticker in the boot to show it was done.

That is if a Registered Keeper was let know to take the vehicle to a Main Dealer, or the vehicle was in for a service at a Main Dealer.

Oddly some 'Skoda Approved Used Cars' might not have it done due to not getting Serviced if one was not due.

Now called Recall Actions, which is not a Recall, because the DfT / DVSA (VOSA) allowed VW to say, Not Safety Critical.

Can be a Critical Expense though to owners that end up with a lemon.

A sticker in the boot? I've had mine done i.e. oil replaced and software update, but don't see said sticker. I will add this worry to the possible ( probable) 1.8 tsi  tensioner failure worry. At 6 years plus age and 29,000 miles maybe I should sell up and move on!

same here with regards to said sticker

have hunted high and low and definitely no sticker - am beginning to wonder if it was actually done - as upon speaking to dealer they said it was the transmission oil that was changed - which when recently changed was still synthetic and they were unable to clarify exactly what oil was meant to be changed (originaslly told me there was only one oil in it)

sadly am quickly losing any confidence in skoda and have a feeling this will just be a series of buck passing

See post #91 & 104, post #106 to see instructions for where someone not too smart to know where the sticker goes.

(Many Technicians seemed to have a bit of trouble understanding the Service Campaign Instructions & the Software Update seemed to get done rather quickly at some workshops, 'Implausibly' quick.

Part No's there for the Sticker & the 2 bottles of oil.

The Service Campaign work should be on the Skoda Computer System as well, also in the Service Book if there is one,

Stamped & Dated.

The sticker will look similar to this...
