caliper repair kit P/N

Featured Replies

It now looks like the rear calipers are just starting to seize. Squeeky brakes coupled with rear discs warmer than the front suggests so. Does anyone know the piston sizes in these calipers and if different sizes exist? Part numbers for the kit would be really helpful. The car is a Vrs tdi 170 year 06.

If you look at the calliper you will  see a number cast into the housing, that is the piston diameter, then just order the kit for it.

I know, I know... I'm taking the easy way out here.

Reconditioned rear caliper can be had for £39.99 with a £10 cash back when you return your old one in the prepaid provided bag.

Saves all the messing about and the part has all new seals etc. Nice n shiny.

Yes it is the easy way out, but VRS has painted callipers, so unless you reseal the old ones you will end up with an unpainted one.

I managed to get a full set front and rear, and I resealed them, due to the history not known, it was fairly easy once I got the pistons out.

Thanks buddy. Yes well I'm sure it was painted red from the factory but that's long gone. The calipers are looking quite tired but some caliper paint and a strip down should sort them. I was trying to avoid buying new calipers due to the fact the car needs a clutch/flywheel. Although two new calipers can be had for just under £200 off ebay painted too. Where abouts on the caliper is the piston size btw?

Hi Mate,

You will find the number on the back of the calliper near the large hole on the back, it will be something like 42,38 that refers to the size in MM

Hope this helps?, oh and there are different kits for the different sizes too, as I found out, the bleed screws tend to be stiff to turn, so I replaced mine while I was resealing them.

Thanks for the help. Were did you get the seal kits from? They seem reasonably priced on ebay but not sure regarding the quality.

Slightly off topic...are there any differences between a standard rear Octavia caliper and a vrs rear caliper, apart from the colour? (Mk2 petrol vrs)

I normally get mine from Number one for Skoda, which is Rain worth motors in Mansfield, they will need the chassis number.

I got a set of callipers from a 2012 and resealed them, fronts are standard size, rears are different sizes as I found out, so found some from Germany for the rears, cos I hadn't got the chassis number of the car they came off.

Hope this helps,

Hi, piston size could be different, not sure, not done much brake work on a standard car, sorry.

Thanks again. The plan is to remove the callipers clean everything up check if the pistons are winding back ok then paint them up if they are serviceable. I'll see if there is a piston size stamped on the calliper body. If so I'll post back on here it may help someone in future.

All that hassle when you can get 2 reconditioned items in gleaming bare metal for £60, all you need is to spray them.

That is a good price for recon items. Could you post a link buddy?

There are 2 different sized pistons. I found out the hard way.

There's a TRW caliper and one made by someone else, can't think of the name.

Anyway cut a long story short, I ended up pulling the old pistons out and gave them a very light rub down with some wet and dry. Cleaned and lubed the slider pins etc....

It made virtually no difference if any at all.

I think some of the sticking comes from something not allowing some of the pressure to return within the caliper.

In the end I brought 2 brand new calipers in red (trw calipers) for £160 ish.

Job done.

Did you fit a new seal kit though? If the old seal swelled up enough that would be stopping the piston moving. I'm actually quite surprised you got the piston back in at all.

I thoroughly approve of taking stuff apart and mending it, so here's my best attempt at help.

From this page, scrolling down to the line that says  "disc brake      rear     *RS*  "  (assuming *RS* refers to vRS)

That page lists the OE number for the seal kit as 1J0698671 (item 12). That OE part number will hopefully give you some hits on ebay or cross-reference to something a motor factors will stock or can get for you.

Judging by the caliper description "CII38HR-A LUCAS" I'm imagining that the pistons are 38mm diameter.

Check if possible that car data sticker confirms the rear brake PR number as 1KP to validate some of my assumptions about which page is relevant for you.

Thanks buddy so much help/info this forum is the dogs!! I am also a lover of fixing rather than replacing. It saves money but i do get satisfaction knowing i fixed it and it's working as it should.

I have a rear spring to fit when I'm off on Tue/Wed so I'll look on the calliper and let people know piston size. Thanks all.

For all those who asked:

Thanks...but they don't appear to have any rear calipers for an Octavia vRS  :(

I think you'll find they do, email or call them if the website isn't model specific.

Right chaps a little update. Stripped both rear callipers today. Basically drivers side rear was fine nothing seized and piston wound back in easily. Discs and pads look pretty new. Passenger side was stiff almost seized but a bit of winding in out got it freed off. So I'm fairly happy with the callipers. I will look into replacing both in the new year i think but they'll get me through xmas. Couldn't find any numbers stamped regarding piston size unfortunately just what appeared to be a production date? I did notice when checking handbrake operation after reassembling callipers the arm on the back operated by the cable wouldn't return fully to the stop. Never thought too much about it at the time as i knew everything was free but after driving the car about 10 miles both back discs are very very hot. The fronts ok to touch but both rears no way you could touch them. I know the callipers aren't seized so what's the issue? Is it possible after the brakes were changed the cables need adjusted? I've never had to alter cables before but like I've said it's both rear discs way too hot.

With the handbrake fully off there should be 1-1.5mm gap between handbrake lever and stop, access cable to adjust via rear ashtray.

Most probably you'll find one or both of the rear cables partly seized.

Any easy fix to remove and clean/lube/free up if you like DIY or just replace.

I secure a small plastic bag on one end of the cable using an elastic band to form a funnel. This is secured above head height to e.g. laundry pole and filled with a small amount of penetrating fluid whilst the lower end is continuously worked in and out to work the fluid through the cable.

It can be quite a job but if the cable is in otherwise good shape I don't mind the effort. Be sure to work it through well to wash old lube/dirt/rust out.

Enjoy a silky smooth handbrake again :-)

Just a quick check in the Haynes manual suggests 4 to 7 clicks of the handbrake is correctly adjusted. Mine is fully on after 2. And the arm was at least 10mm from it's stop on both sides. I'm pretty sure the cables are ok as the lever feels nice and smooth ( After sorting the ribbon! ). I'll start with adjusting the cables tomorrow as it's easy enough to do. If no joy then I'll look at the cables.

Hi Mate,

Its not "stamped" its actually cast into the calliper, so its a raised up number, and its near to the piston at the back.

Pm me your email please and I will send you a photo, I have not photo hosting software, and don't want it either.

Cheers,
