Winter tyres

Featured Replies

Fabia is my first car with alloy's so, I'll be fitting it with steel wheels for the winter. The current size is 215/45/R16 for me, but I was recommended to get 165/70/R14 with steel's for the winter. Would this be a good choice, if not what would be a better choice for the winter?

Do you get much fresh snow? Narrow tyres are better in fresh snow, but width doesn't make much difference on cold, dry sealed surfaces, or even on smooth ice (2x0 = 4x0 = 0 irrespective of tread width).

Yeah, we get fresh snow, so according to you, the 165/70/R14 would be a better choice?

Be careful, most 1.2 TSI Fabias are fitted with 288mm front brakes and the 14" rims don't fit on them. The correct size is 185/60 R15.

Yes, I'd prefer narrower tyres for driving on fresh snow, but as above you do need to make sure that the wheels fit over the brakes (15" will fit over 288mm discs; you need 16" rims to fit over 312mm discs).
