a Phaeton

is it true its a Bentley in disguise?

just for me and exec work though

Yes in that it's based on the VW D1 platform which is also used on the Continental GT and Continental Flying Spur

Hmmm. Does that mean you can also have Bentley maintenance and repair costs - just with a VW badge and without the "Bentley" bragging rights?   :p

I would think the same part for the Bentley would have a few extra 0's on it

It's based on the technology platform used for the Audi A8, though it uses a conventional steel unibody instead of the A8's aluminium spaceframe. When VW bought Bentley and set about creating new models after Bentley and Rolls-Royce were separated, they took the Phaeton's chassis and used it as the basis for their new Continental model.

The Phaeton was well regarded in the press (generally considered to be a better luxury car than the S-Class) but it had the wrong badge so commercially it was a flop. As a Bentley it's done pretty well.

3.0d road tax £500

lol

If you get an early 06 plate its only £280 from memory...still a lot. I actually nearly bought one a little while ago but couldn't get over the lack of finesse. The media system was poor in its design, it looked like something from the 90's. I'd take the A8 any day. Plus the weight of it. It didn't feel great with the 3.0 diesel. It's so heavy!

Yep, the wrong badge indeed for this car.

Just looked at photos of two Phaeton media systems - fairly similar layout, one is all shiny buttons, the other matt grey all over. I guess the grey one is the later. Either way, both look better that that fitted in Merc's S Class of the same vintage, early/mid 2000's. That was abysmal to operate when parked up, never mind on the move. We complain about our Boleros and Amundsens - the Merc system was dire, both to operate and listen to.

Not according to my mate, a fair amount of boggo Passat parts in there too, general maintenance shouldn't be too bad.
