Rear brake drum adjustment

Featured Replies

I am aware these are supposed to be self adjusting but when I got my car, S/H, it had too much travel on the handbrake. That was sorted, now 6 months down the line the handbrake travel is back where it was. Does anybody know if if the mechanism is the same as on mk1s, with a hole in the drum so you can adjust things.

On some Fabia III's the rear brakes are disks/pads.

On other's ( like yours ) they are drums/shoes.

My rule of thumb is that the handbrake lever should travel between 4 and 12 clicks until very tight.

The action of pulling the handbrake lever up ( as far/tight as it can go ) will adjust the handbrake.

This will not happen straight away.

Some people don't pull them up often enough and/or tight enough.

It could also be that the handbrake cable needs adjusting, not the drums/shoes.

Do you know what was adjusted last time.

How many clicks up will yours travel?

Thanks AG Falco.

This car isn't my daily driver and I don't know what was adjusted last time. The handbrake comes up to far, borderline MOT failure, and there is too much travel on the brake pedal which is reduced if you take the handbrake up a notch. Cars out at the moment so can't check the number of clicks. More later.

Possibly fixed, got the handbrake travel down to a tight 7 clicks now with some energetic application. Going out shortly and see what the foot brake is like now.

Good, hope it all works now.

I just practice the handbrake turns regularly to keep it working properly.  :notme:

Thanks AG Falco.

Major improvement in brake pedal feel. Looks like I will be doing handbrake pulls every weekend.
