New to modding, need help with my VRS

Hey all, thank you for taking the time to look at this post and any help will be highly appreciated.

 

I own a Fabia VRS 03 plate and i've recently run into some money and wanted to treat her ;) I have an extensive list of things I want to buy for the car but the first thing I want is a new exhaust system.

Whether it is a full de-cat system, cat back& downpipes... As 'Chavvy' as it may sound, at this stage I'm looking for louder sound as I will be re-mapping it later on in the future.

I had a look into this obviously and I ran across a project vrs someone had posted and I am thinking about getting the system he/she has got; he said this "It has been fitted with a 2.5″ cat-back system, complete with de-cat pipe, by Prospeed Custom Exhausts in Cardiff.

The difference to the sound is unbelieveable. It actually sounds like a petrol now! I love the noise. Its rumbly around town at around 1,800rpm, quietens down for cruising between 2,000rpm and 2,500rpm, then when flooring it above 3,000rpm it sounds a bit like a shark eating a dragon! Not raspy, but really deep and fairly loud. The car revs a lot more freely all the way up to 4,200rpm now, where as it before it always felt a little restricted at higher RPM’s."

Whether or not this is entirely correct i'm not too sure of, therefore any feedback is hugely appreciated!

Sound difference yes it will make it louder. I highly doubt it sounds like a petrol however. The PD engine is a fairly agricultural lump and doesn't produce petrol quality noise at all.

I don't agree with the revving more freely at higher revs either. Diesel engines work differently to Petrols and aren't strangled the same as what a petrol is by a cat. If I could of had a downpipe fitted easily with a cat installed when I did my modding, I would of done.

The best value for money mods you can make on the mk1 vRS are a remap and a rear anti roll bar.

It depends on how much you plan on spending, even at standard on a warm day your standard inter cooler will get heatsoaked after a few thrashed, therefore that needs up rating if you plan on raising the power, with more power there is the risk the standard clutch will jump ship, so plan to uprate the clutch and flywheel. Once you are going faster you need to be able to stop quicker, therefore a set of 312mm front brake upgrades are necessary.

All depends on your budget.

A hybrid turbo, front mounted intercooler, uprated clutch, bigger front brakes and a remap would put you a long way above where you are now. The exhaust, apart from changing the tone/pitch/volume of your diesel lump, won't make any difference to performance.

Get some research done ;)

Standard exhaust is good for 230bhp so if you want noise just chop the back box out. Save you money for a decent mods such as those listed above

Just ordered a whiteline RARB from DPM for £149 delivered. Other mods are the 312 brakes from the mk1 Audi TT. Definitely more satisfying than exhaust noise.

312 brakes are also available from mk1 Octavia vRS, 25th Anniversary Golf (GTi??) and a couple of other models I think.

Bigger brakes will do a lot more for you than an even noisier tractor engine ;)

As others, the standard system is not restrictive until you start trying to build an engine with similar power to the Seat Leon WTCC spec.

 

Also, think how much fun it will be with a "standard quiet" system and more power than most 1.8T petrols when someone with a f@rt-boxed Corsa tries to race you!

Thanks for all the great advice guys! Really helped me with plans for the car! Also, if you could help me out with this... the person who I brought the car off said to me that the car had been re-mapped before he got it, but i hadn't been in a VRS before i had mine so i don't know whether this was true. I am thinking of getting a re-map that i know is reliable... is this a smart choice or? 
 
Finally, I want to post a photo of my car on here but unsure of how to...

It can be hard to confirm whether it has been remapped or not without having a comparison or vcds to plug in. Especially if it isn't a harsh or smoky remap. I would say a new remap would be a good decision, it will be much more up to date and I should of thought will improve things, maybe not power output, but a smoother power delivery perhaps.

If you go to someplace like, say, Unit 18 (who I think are fairly close to you) they'll be able to tell if the car is mapped and maybe even by whom.

 

The best way of posting photos is to get yourself a photo hosting account somewhere (DeviantArt is good), and then link to your photos on it.

+1 for unit 18, Ali will give you a nice smooth remap and will tell you if there's anything slightly up with the car. Everyone I go there's normally anything few vRS's having work done to them

While I would never stop anyone choosing what to spend their money on, given the amount of money you are indicating you are willing to spend, can I suggest selling the vRS and buying something standard that is just faster out of the box?

The vRS is a quick car that feels quicker than it really is. It feels quick because it has a relatively huge engine in a small car. But even if you spend thousands on your car, it will still be a Skoda Fabia vRS.

Modding is huge fun, but if you've just come into some money, why not at least consider looking at a car that is faster as standard and doesn't need modding?

But if you really do want to mod then new suspension, rear anti-roll bar and bigger brakes would be my first purchases. Pretty much anything will be an improvement over the standard items. And then a simple remap to 170bhp-ish. It's plenty. And pretty much bullet-proof.
