Hi all,

So I need to get the Vrs serviced. It has just seen 15500 miles on the clock.

Firstly is it worth taking it to a main dealer and pay the cost of a service these days?

Or my second option is to service it myself.

I'm considering doing a major service

Air filter

Oil filter

Oil

Polen filter

And spark plugs

Can anyone recommend the best 5w40 oil I can get and what spark plugs is now the best to use on these engines ??

Any advice would be great on any service parts

I personally took it to the dealer for services as I wanted to have the full service history should anything go wrong.

 

My pessimism materialized and I ended up needing an engine replacement when out of warranty, for which I received a goodwill contribution from Skoda. Although I have heard of others getting contribution (sometimes better than mine!) without Skoda history, so really you're at the mercy of the dealer.

 

If I was to go back I'd probably do the same though, it is at least some bargaining power to show you've serviced it with Skoda.

Also FMSH is a plus point for most buyers when time to sell... :thumbdown: :p

Too much of a risk for a vrs to be serviced outside the dealer network considering the engine history. Ive seen it said that up to a third have had terminal issues.

And that's rising every day.

If you can change the Spark Plugs then the DENSO correct for the car and the correct gap.

Filter is easy but put oil in it before putting on. The VW one traps the oil, so less messy.  I prefer a Mahle though.

 

5W 40 FS (VW502 00),  the brand does not matter.

ASDA, Tesco, Comma what ever.

If you've not done them before then the plugs can be a bit of a mare.

I pay £18 a month to the dealer. It covers my next 3 services and consumables as well as 1 mot. Worth it in my opinion.

£200 plus a year for 3 oil and filter changes and maybe 4 spark plugs a air filter And a £57 mot. Plus look see and report inspections. Not cheap but if it gives you piece of mind. Reality is you want the parts changed as a matter of course.

Thanks for all your advice, it does seem a lot get their cars serviced from the main dealer due to the engine issues. However how likely are they to proceed with a claim if the car is out of warranty?

And does anyone know the average cost from a skoda dealer to have a service?

I can get the complete service parts for £80 oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs and polen filter

No average price, but Skoda National Pricing at Participating Dealers can be £159 Minor Service, & £269 Major / Inspection Service.

But that can be cheaper.

 

As to DENSO Spark Plugs, £40-£60. 

Oil £20-£40

Oil Filter £4-£9

Pollen Filter £11 or more

Air Filter £11 or more

Plug £2     So you are at your £80 minimum.    Do you have a Ignition Coil remover or can you borrow one?

Brake Fluid change at 3 years then each 2 years as per Service Schedule / Guidelines.

There's also a fuel filter in there somewhere...

There is now in the last 2 years, 

there was not any Fuel Filter in the Service Schedule / Guidelines until enough were failing. 

?

When do you change them, at the 2nd Major Service?

 

There is an Alarm Siren replacement in the Service Schedule at 5 years, they are not being done.

At seat it was 40k or 4 years so we've applied that in our centre.

Plenty of "low fuel pressure" faults occurring that were completely avoidable.

At Skoda Dealerships customers that asked were told that with the vRS Twinchargers they were life long fuel filters and did not need changing, 

then they stated needing changing, and then they were included by some in Major Services.

A lot of things are life long fitted, but that's basically 3/4 year of warranty and after that don't care.
