A Trump Trade War with Germany?.

Featured Replies

He can't take on Germany. He's have to take on the EU and that's a significantly powerful bloc even to the USA.

Protectionism doesn't work, Trump just doesn't know his economic history but he has form for playing to the crown and then rolling back.

......can the rational keep him in the real world.

Germany needs Greece and Italy in order to keep the euro weak.

Undermining the EU may be something he can work on.

In Indiana the Carrier Co are seemingly going to get govt assistance to keep the company from leaving for Mexico, so how is that done without infringing the WTO's trade rules.

Boeing and Airbus are both threatened by an emerging Chinese govt owned manufacturer (an A320/B737 type aircraft) which is making them freak out at the prospect of China ignoring the WTO also.

Serious times ahead for all AFAIC

Trump has so much to thank Germany for. If they had not thrown out his Grandfather after he had returned from the USA the first time The Donald might never have inherited the fortune he did from his father.

Hmmm... so its Germany's fault?

I thought the main reason, Audi`s, BMWs, Jaguar/Land Rover, Toyota, Mercedes Benz, Volvo and now a lesser extant Volkswagen etc are so popular in the US is because American cars are crap!

And that is one of the reasons that Detroit failed along with intransigent unions?

I am sure it is much more complex than that.

Like the old BLMC days I guess........the attitude - "if they don't like it they can go elsewhere".

A cooperative Japanese management/employee system setting up in southern states producing a quality product for the conservative U.S. market started the process.

The Germans followed the model also.

Ford and GM need their German based arm to provide a competitive, modern product for a world market.

Beyond that they make big trucks for big profit for a big country .

Germany is hiding under and exploiting the (Italy and Greece influenced) weak euro.

That enables them to export more than the U.S.

Trump would love to see the EU collapse, and with it the € which enables Germany's trade surplus.

The U.S. financial news keeps talking down the sustainability of the EU because Greece and Italy are part of it.

Ford and GM might then have a financial incentive to employ more at home, perhaps.

Looks like stuff is going to happen, unless he doubles down on his known cynicism for exploiting everyone..........yep, the latter is more likely.

Looks like he's now restocking the swamp too.
