1.9tdi 4x4 advice please

Hi, sorry if this has been done recently but my daughter lives on a farm and swears blind she needs a 4x4, like a lot of farmers around here she has a Freelander not as a farm tool but basically to get to and fro, but it's now all ready becoming a money pit, I suggested a 1.9 tdi 4x4 am I right in doing so and would I be correct in assuming there's no dpf ( 2006 ) and has usual mk11 octavia reliability?

A dpf was only fitted to the 2L PD 4x4, not the 1.9.

The 1.9 diesel is one of the best engines VAG have ever built. Refined no, agricultural yes, but if you want an engine that will outlive the car then you can't go far wrong with the PD105.

 

Try to find one with regular oil changes (annual / 10,000 miles, not the variable longlife service intervals), this will all but guarantee reliability.

 

The Haldex (4x4) system is also tough too, but it really depends on if the oil has been changed as required every 40,000 miles, most dealers almost always miss this during routine servicing. Listen for drumming at speed during the test drive, climb under the car and look for corrosion around the pump and any leaks out of the diff or transfer box. There should be no front wheel spin either if the power is being effectively transferred to the rear wheels.

 

If she wants something that has the looks to match the off road ability and compete with her friends Freelanders then try an Octavia Scout with either the 2.0 litre PD140 or CR140 (common rail) engine. You loose a bit of the 1.9 reliability but gain refinement and a sixth speed plus all the nice chunky 4x4 plastics and toys. Unfortunately the Scout attracts higher purchase prices too and that blasted DPF.

 

What is her budget? Could she be swayed with a PCH (lease) deal on a brand new MkIII Scout? We recently sold our 2008 MkII Scout (see the picture in my signature) and now have a 24 month lease on a diesel Scout with an 8,000 mile per year allowance. Including the deposit it will cost me £4,800 over two years or £200 per month. There are some cracking deals out there right now.

 

Just add 20% for a personal lease...

Hi, silver1011, many thanks for the info, all advice appreciated, I have 2 1.9tdi's Fabia mk1 and octy mk11 estate bought mainly on advice from on here and the Skoda garage that used to be in Pickering.

The car needs to replace the Freelander not so much in the ' fashion ' stakes but in its ability to cope with rural Yorkshire roads, weather and farm access.

New or nearly new isn't really and option ( north Yorks farmers and spending money ) no offence meant of course

Having worked in the YDNP, I'll confirm that N.Yorks farmers are simply Scotsmen with all the generosity removed.

 

One consideration is the backside sits rather low and can easily catch you unawares on uneven tracks. If carrying anything more than the weekly shopping you migtht want to add these...

We've owned our 1.9 4x4 since 2005.

It's done about 80,000 miles.

In that time it's needed a new battery, new front discs and pads, new shocks all round (originals snapped at different times), new tyres.

And the dreaded esp module replaced.

It smokes on start up but runs fine.

The exhaust is still original and paintwork is fine.

There's plenty of space in the rear seats and loads of room in the estate version - did they make a saloon?

The sixth gear is good for motorway travel.

I haven't changed the haldex oil since 40,000 miles and it works fine.

Would I buy another one.

Yes, but of course they don't make new ones anymore.

It's a shame that Chapman's in Pickering are no longer going - until Des Winks in Scarborough took on the Skoda franchise, the only option round here was Derek Slacks in Middlesbrough - least said, soonest mended.

According to the people I knew at Champans it was Skoda who forced them out by insisting on " modernisations " which were to costly to make financial sense, because they ( Skoda ) wanted to move the franchise to Des Winks, truth or sour grapes all I know is Chapmans have gone and Des Winks has the franchise. Never used Derek Slacks mainly due to reputation and avoid DM Keith York at all costs, I use an independent garage here in Krikbymoorside, should really get my hands dirty but........
