vrs cold start rattle

Featured Replies

hi,recently part exchanged my trusty fabia vrs tdi for a 2010 vrs.after a short while,it dawned on me that when i  would start the car from cold,it would sound like a bag of nails for a couple of seconds, then sound fine.i then read some posts from people with a similar "problem",and thought,oh dear new cam chain needed, etc etc.anyway, another member posted that there is a valve in the base of the oil filter housing that prevents the oil from draining back into the sump, and if the oil filter is screwed on too tight,it could make the valve malfunction.so,i thought i would change tha oil and filter.when i came to remove the filter,i could'nt believe how tight it was! i eventually got it off,and put a new one on just hand tight.i left the car overnight, then, with baited breath, started the car.could'nt believe it.quiet as a mouse! i'm not saying it's the answer to everyone's problems, but i think it's a good place to start,if you have cold start noise issues.cheers.

hmmm i get a second of rattle from fresh cold start.. ive got the VW silver filter on, looks like its time for a change. Im due a service in jan, if i soeak to skoda do you reckon they will use parts i provide?

i don't think it was actually the filter itself, just the fact that it was overtightened that causes the problem.anyway,i used a bosch filter.
