help anyone?particulary 1.6 petrol owners

Featured Replies

Hi people

We have a VW Golf mark iv 1.6 petrol, MY 2001. the car has been running

Is it the 1.6 8v unit? If so, definitely won't be the coil pack problem (doesn't use coil packs).

My 8v was running similarly to how you describe yours, and then it got progressively worse until it was running terribly, wouldn't rev high/eagerly and cut out frequently and struggled to restart afterwards...turned out to be the "crank position sensor".

You might find a dealer will be happy to do your VAG diagnostics for free, especially if you insinuate that you will be paying them to resolve any of the issues found... :)

thanks for that rob..good question..its a 16v i believe..im pretty sure it is. The car isnt mine its the old mans..i just wanted to see what othere people had it diagnosed as, because with these engines it could be any number of things..

the voice of "CheapAssSolutions.com" has spoken... go Rob

also worth checking the state of the fuel filter.

thanks for your help people. just an update, iv had the temp sensor replaced, and something else which escapes my tired mind at the moment.

i still had the car cutting out at various point, ie when cold and warm. pointed this out to the garage that did the work and they told me bring it in on monday where they will clean the "throttle body" which ties in what some of you helpful guys have said so thanks again for that guys..will keep you updated of the progress..or lack of it..

just on a different note, while getting to this post i passed this one

http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=78597

very interesting..inparticular the point that was made about

"Problem started with a slight hesitation in acceleration after changing gear though at the time I didn't think it was a gearbox problem (Had been having throttle body problems"

i have this "slight hesitation" too especially in second gear...very annoying..so do you guys think my gearbox is on the way out? ifi helps..when the gearbox is cold ie when foirst starting up in the morning..when i change from 1st to 2nd..it crunches...when i change it VERY slowly it doesnt...but even when i do a moderately slow change in the morning, it crunches..

any opinions guys?

thanks again..night
