2002 1.9tdi gearbox popping out of 5th

Featured Replies

It just started today and I am not sure what I am in for when it comes to either doing the work myself or getting it done by someone else. Not even sure how to diagnose which kind of fault it is to know what needs doing.

Jumping out of gear makes me think of worn baulk rings or synchroniser cones.

Start by resetting the gear linkage. There is guide on here. And check the gearbox oil level as 5th gear is the first to lose lubrication when the level drops.

I will take a look at the gear linkage reset, getting to grips with the site still. Might have to go through Google site search to find it if there isn't a sticky.

The vehicle supposedly got a £250 service and remap before it came to me. I shouldnt imagine it would have a lube level issue, but my in law isn't too good at not getting hornswoggled. Says he trusts the guy but I will do the "verify" part of the "trust but verify" thing.

Right... I tried to follow the linkage reset and ran into a problem. Where the thing to turn to lock the transmission is, is a small piece of broken plastic that I can get no grip on to turn. Good thing I went looking for it before doing any work.

Bugger. Suggestions on a postcard?

Got a photo of it at all?
