BBC PLAYER DOWNLOADS > MEMORY STICK

Featured Replies

booo- missed Doctor Whoo yesterday, but I've got it from BBC Player on download. Problem is that it's on my PC,which is up and TV is down (stairs). DVD has an USB input, so in theory I should be able to copy the download to memory stick and play--- but no - mR dvd says I no see /recognise data/ format. So if no one can suggest how to configure program format on stick for DVD player to read it, I'm stuck, as TV & both DVD & STB  have no WIFI capacity. (Download is in MP4 )

I could of course move PC down( lot of effort for one program) / make a long serial cable ( as TV has PC connector), but there must be a simple solution. One which would help her indoors more PC /NET appreciative. i.e- she misses program on TV, and PC can get it for her to watch on TV.

Neither Tv nor DVD player have USB ports?

You can't temporarily move 'er indoors upstairs?

Would this not be something to do with DRM or such like.

Can you use a free DVD burning program on the PC to create a DVD that the player will recognise?

I use a Chromecast to steam from the iplayer app on my tablet.

Might be worth getting a Now TV box. On sale at the mo at some places for < £20 with 3 months free entertainment pass. These are no-subscription boxes and have iPlayer and other TV catch-up apps built in. You just need a TV with an HDMI connector, connect the box to the router via Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable. If your TV only has SCART inputs you can get HDMI to SCART adapters.

I the iPlayer is specifically designed to stop this, as is every other streaming service.

Could you use some sort of screen casting to push the iPlayer from a tablet/phone to your TV?

Or buy a Firestick / Chromcast cheap in the sales.

As above it's will be to do with DRM, I think you can only download it to the PC for 30 days and it will not work on any other device. There're plenty of tutorials and guides should you wish to get over this. Google is your friend, as always.

I'd get a streaming stick of one sort or another. Most of them (all of them?) will let you stream BBC from the iPlayer. Plus you turn your telly into a pseudo smart TV :)

I have a Roku stick and a Chromecast key and they both have advantages unique to themselves. Roku supports Amazon Video, Google Play and also Netflix, Chromecast supports Google Play (big choice of new release rental movies), Netflix, but not Amazon (it's competitor). I believe the Amazon Fire stick supports Netflix and Amazon (obviously) but not Google Play (competitor). The latest versions of the Chromcast key called 'Ultra' supports 4K and HDR - including Dolby Vision :) and the next gen Roku stick will also support 4K.

The thing about Chromcast is you use your phone/tablet to control the show, but with Roku you get a nifty remote control, although you can also use a phone/remote too. Roku will let you screen mirror, but for some reason it's been in Beta for over a year?

I'd have thought so ,too, but DRM looks like the culprit . It's only one program ,we've missed so I don't feel the need to buy a device for just the one  ( it would never get used again as Swimbo is frightened of new stuff /anything to do with computers) .I've got plenty of serial cable and a few serial plugs etc, and although my MOBO is reasonably new ,it still sports a serial port, so I could do it that way as TV has a PC port .

You can screencast your laptop/ PC to a Chromecast too. Been doing it for ages. Videostream for Chromecast ;)

Sorry, I didn't mention the casting for the Chromecast key as I thought it was it's main selling point (the clue is also in it's name ;))  so the OP would have known that. You're probably right to mention it though.

I have NOW TV boxes plugged into all TV's around the house to allow me to use the free iplayer things for each channel and youtube, as I didn't have an aerial cable into any room other than living room (got bored the other week and put a splitter in loft and now have TV again for first time in over 6 years and in every room :cocktail: ). As I got a voucher with each one and they are all on one account (max of 4 per account) I have been living the free movies and entertainment dream for a year :D Got a 4 months movies pass box and a 6 month entertainment one both £17.49 each last week, but all gone now back to 2 month movies and 3 month entertainment for £15 odd on offer. When you use the voucher and gets towards end and you cancel it they offer you movies for movies for £3.99 a month for 4 or 6 months, I take that offer then cancel that in last month and use my next voucher and start the cycle again :D

Got one of the new NOW TV Smart boxes last year when they came out too, to turn the non freeview HD TV in living room into one, pretty good with same remote and features as the normal boxes but with a quad core processor and freeview HD tuner built in and 8gb of ram to pause/rewind live TV. Bad thing is I finally took out Amazon Prime as my new TV for the entertainment room being a smart one had it inbuilt and Prime was on offer pre Grand Tour.... Now I have bloody fire sticks for all the other TV's too, but NOW TV I find better for it's interface and range of content. Can also stream some Sky channels live on the NOW TV boxes like Sky One, Discovery, Nat Geo, Atlantic, GOLD etc etc and the movie channels too if you have the cinema pass. I only noticed this option in menu after about 8 months of having 3 or 4 of the bloody boxes....

For BBC iplayer etc just grab a box like Lee suggested from most shops inc Asda and use the free 3 months pass, if you don't want to ever pay you can register an account select your free 14 day trial then add your voucher for 3.5 months free then cancel the both of them and they will expire automatically upon end of your free time.

Just jumping on this thread with silly question time....

I'm downloading a programme on sky +. Just wondering if I can watch content on the firestick whilst the download is on going ?  Don't want to mess with cables if it stops it and I have to re-start it, you see....

Apologies for the nooby style question but I've no idea.

Yes you can

Wasn't sure with telly being out of the loop.

Quick supplementary question....can anyone recommend a splitter device so that we can have the firestick and sky+ both plugged in at the same time ?

Just ordered this to do a similar job. Looked at loads, and prices vary a lot.

I wanted one with no power source needed (already too many plugs), and a manual switch between inputs. A lot with the auto detection seem to have problems & for me I don't mind pressing a button to switch it over.

As a bonus this one is bi-directional, so can be reversed if needed to have one input 2 screens :)

Great reviews (bar one), but will post a quick review once I get it later this week :)

Look forward to a positive review and then I'll order one.

Is there a power cable with it?

Is there a power cable with it?

Nope, I ordered this particular splitter because it doesn't need its own power source. I already have enough cables and too few sockets!

Received the HDMI switch today. Very neat little square box. Just a shade wider than two HDMI plugs wide.

2 x plugs in, 1 x out. Put Amazon Fire TV box and my DVR into it, and connected the out to my Soundbase (which then connects to my TV).

No drama, just works. Round on / off switch to toggle between the inputs. 2 x LED's to indicate which is connected (a bit t bright, but hidden away behind the TV) could tape over if it bothers.

Haven't reversed the input to try as don't need it but it might be useful later on.

So in summary, compact HDMI switch that doesn't need a power supply, with a manual switch to toggle, that works as it should :)

Happy to recommend :)

Mine has come too, just waiting for the cable from the tv to the switcher to come. As you say, neat little box.
