Air con delete, whats involved

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Used search function but still not feeling clued up enough to do this so any help would be fantastic.

Cars up on ramps with bumper off etc etc as I fitted a hybrid and removed smic ready to fit the fmic, then discovered radiator was leaking so got a new rad. I was gonna struggle my arse off wiggling the rad out then thought how much id love to lose that air con rad! Especially as I never use aircon!

So, Im thinking order shorter belt and fit reverse side of oem tensioner, remove pump and pipe work and radiator. I have a tank to remove to I believe? Im away from car but trying to picture it lol

Am I there with that lot? How do you release pressure? As im on stands I cant take it anywhere to be degassed.

Final question, is it worth it lol Its just while im about the hybrid and fmic egr delete etc am I aswell getting a charge on with removing this lot to?

Well hope I made sense with all that!

Kind regards to all

G

You never use air-con!!!  What about preventing the windows misting on damp days?  It's not just for use to reduce high temperatures (probably not that common where you live!).

You must not have visited the lovely Moray Firth.

Look, Im an ex Land rover defender 90 owner. Opening the flaps at front to get a face full of sleet and gales, so I can handle the fabia windows down 2 inch either side and ordinary heat on screen to demist. :) besides the wind blowing a hooley through the door seals normaly works. lol

All the motors I know with the TDi130 have aircon or full climate in them.

Opening the flaps at front to get a face full...

How very continental of you  :D

Theres always one lol. :)

You are not supposed to release the gas to the atmosphere really. But yes you could remove the condenser at the front and as much pipework as you can along with the compressor.

no real saving by doing so tho really

Thats valuable info thanks, interesting you think no gains to be had. I need to know a few more verdicts on if its worth it or not to sway me. Man all that room to change my radiator with no air con rad !

OK, you might get some extra physical room, but you won't save much mass or power consumption.

as above all pd130 engines had aircon,so no easy way to delete the pump.

But I'm sure a user on here did it,search for silky

IIRC it involves making up different pump mounting plates to go on the engine for tensioner etc

It's not worth it, when it's not on there is very little drag to cause parasitic power loss. Plus you'll have to put up with eternal fault codes, not a problem in a race car but pointless in a road car.

I did it on my rally car purely because I stripped everything anyway and wanted more airflow through the rad. The only heavy part is the compressor really everything else is thin alloy really.

How did you do it Jim? :)

I just ran a shorter belt around the "wrong" side of the tensioner in the ribbed side of the belt runs over the tensioner pully.

Coskev,

how the heck did you find that bypass pulley! Nice bit of kit. So purchasing that allows the use of the oem belt?

I have decided against this for now, I need to get the FMIC mounted and new rad done tomorrow, then pipe work fitted so I haven't time to get ripped in to removing the air on.

I like the idea of losing the air on rad as mentioned for air flow as it's gonna look crowded after the FMIC is on. I think I will definitely do the removal at some point next year.

Thanks all for the replies and help in this. I really did need a feel for all this before making my mind up.

Hi guys, my air con compressor is on its way out and I don't fancy buying a new one so would rather do an air con delete. I bought a brand new shorter belt and brand new tensioner and ran the belt on the wrong side of the tensioner like a few people have said and this didn't work. The belt had far too much movement when the engine was running, it was as if the tensioner was tensioning the belt, then wasn't, then was again. Is there a idler pulley available that will 100% fit in place of the air con compressor

Theirs another pulley that works, from memory, instead. Wasn't it on the SDI non-air con model obviously that worked instead?

I've had it done on mine but the garage that did it for me didn't use it, although I did buy it for them, I'll put some photos up on my build thread at some point.
