Booked for a service!

Featured Replies

Ok finally I made appointment for service. I need front park sensors working again and battery check. Also I need second opinion on weather dry DSG needs a service or not? Cuz when I called for info, in one of authorized services they said there's no plan in the service database for that type of DSG?

So far asking for offers for service in authorized Škoda services are damn expensive! And yes my O3 is out of warranty with +124K km on the clock.

For regular oil change, filters and so on. Price is almost double in comparison, local mechanic or a friend mechanic that can do that service in his garage.

Authorized service I booked in is where ex colleagues husband is working, so I might negotiate to get some discount hopefully for next oil and filter change.

What you guys think in general about idea of servicing car in local shops?

I've got no issues about using local garages as long as the staff are trained mechanics, and preferably have some VAG knowledge. At that mileage, I'd think there'd be benefits to changing the DSG oil as long as there are drain and level or fill plugs.

The dry clutch 7 speed box has no oil change interval as it uses 2 different fluids that don't mix with the friction material.

Ok James. So you're also claiming that there is no heat or pressure "wear" on either of these fluids?

Yes, just like manual gearboxes, the oil is invincible :notme:

I didn't claim anything at all, I stated fact.

Comparatively speaking between the 6 speed wet box and 7 speed dry box - the reason the 6 speed box has a change interval for the service life of the oil and filter is because the oil runs throughout the mechatronics unit, gear cluster and clutch pack meaning that DSG oil is exposed to extreme temps and soiling through its normal working operation. Both these effects can hinder operation hence a change recommendation.

The 7 speed dry clutch box uses normal gear oil in the gear cluster and hydraulic fluid in the mechatronic unit and whilst it is part of the gearbox it is actually a separate component in itself and other than a breather outlet is sealed for life. So the oil(s) are at no point under the exact same conditions as the oil in the 6 speed box are - no material soiling and the temps are nowhere near as high. The gear cluster is exactly the same as a manual gearbox. VW AG don't have a service interval for any of their manual gearboxs or the gear cluster on a 7 speed DSG box. Whether people choose to change the oil is entirely down to them.

There was an ongoing service campaign some years ago where the oil was changed out in the 7 speed box but that's long been dealt with and I'd be very surprised if any mkIII octavias were affected.

Thanks; I understand all that, and the reasons for changing oil in a "wet clutch" transmission. What I don't understand is how VAG have removed the compression and sheer stresses on oil in their gearboxes unlike other transmission manufacturers.

Most manufacturers don't have a change interval on manual boxes. BMW boxes even have stickers on them indicating that the gearbox is a sealed unit and the oil is "for life".

The only time they stipulate that the oil is changed is post repair on internal components.

Does that mean it will last the life of the car? Maybe it will? Maybe it won't?

You could always give the dealer a call and ask them? I have the last of the wet 6 speed boxes and it is great for towing. The 7 speed dry boxes dont need to be serviced. I dont think there in anyone on here who will tell you any different because it is the right answer.

He already did I believe:

Ok I studied how transmissions work the other day, manual, automatic and DSG. And it is correct dry DSG does not need service.

Left the car in service. :(

They don't know where is the problem and the bumper needs to go down so they can find out why front park sensors aren't working.

So I got a call today and turns out front parking sensor CPU got fried. How? I can imagine either overheating problem or short circuit.  :swear: And car is out of warranty. OFC insurance won't cover that..
