Skoda Swing radio replacement question (5J0 035 161 G)

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Recently, I posted that one of my kids had "posted" a pound coin into the wife's stereo but I managed to sort that one out.

This time, a 20p piece has been put in (yep - they obviously cannot resist) which appears to have shorted things out on the PCB.

There is no audio output and the top row of buttons do not appear to respond to being pressed. Anything could have been shorted although there is a bit of scorching around what is probably an audio amplified IC judging by the heat sinking...(see attached)

I have some questions:

1. Does anyone fix these units? I guess it requires a PCB swap at the very least.

2. Is the 5J0 035 161 G compatible with previous versions, e.g. the -D variant? I ask as there are quite a few of these on Ebay that are a lot cheaper than the -G. When I say compatible, I mean that I can plug it in and there will be no issues with interacting with the car (showing temperature) and no wiring harness modifications...

3. If I replace the unit with alternative unit (e.g. a -D variant) and the unit doesn't come with a code, do I have to have it unlocked somehow ? Or, if the unit does come with a code, will it still work with "the car" as car and radio appear to recognise each other after key on requiring no code to need to be input.

4. Are there any pin compatible cheaper alternatives than replacing this unit with another Skoda device?

Thanks for any responses...

i have one sitting around at home if you want me to check the part number? came out of my vrs when i replaced with amundsen+.

i'm looking to sell it anyway

Not sure if anybody repairs the Swing. I know Rustynuts repairs the Columbus units, but i dont really think the Swing is worth repairing tbh. They're cheap as chips anyway.

Cant help you with the differences in model number... maybe Rustynuts or Phil-E could help on that...

Regarding number 3, theres people on ebay that will sell you the code for £10 for any radio if it doesn't come with it (sort of defeats the point of having a code, doesn't it?). Once the code is input the dash will remember the radio and shouldn't need to be input again.

You could always go aftermarket. They're usually alot better.
