I know this has been discussed in the past, but is there a fail safe way after 'servicing' the starter the noise wont come back?

 

So far Ive read, the casing needs taking apart and all gears lubricating with grease.  I also have the rayon 'bush' that is at the top end which can cause drag on the shaft also.

It is usually the bush that causes the noise, so when you fit a new bush you have to be really careful that you don't damage the bush even slightly fitting it, as the shaft will "pick up" the bush and screech again.

 

If you have good quality sockets to use as a spacer to push in the new bush, then you should be good, but if they are a bit ragged around the opening of the socket, you may have issues.

 

You really need to find a lubricant that will not cause issues with the bush, I did have some, but had a clear out last year and chucked it. I have been racking my brain to remember what it was, but can only remember it was made by Wurth UK.

Thanks for that.  Hopefully fitting it soon.  Ive seen just regular grease used on the gears?

On the gears should be ok, but I would not put it near the bush, as I seem to recall reading that the bush swells if contaminated by the wrong sort of lube. I will see if I can find the reading matter, but I think it was from about 3 or 4 years ago so confidence is not that high on finding it.

No probs, Ill remember that when we strip it down!
