2009 Skoda Superb 1.8 TSI SE DSG - Any known issues?

Featured Replies

All,

Been looking for a reliable family car to do 10k a year and for weeks i've only had my eye on MK3 Octavia's 2013-2015 but considering a older superb for less money. I only want a petrol.

Was the 1.8 tsi on a 2009 superb only ever available as DSG? Is this a reliable package?

I have read that the 2.0 tsi in the Mk2 VRS Octavia should be avoided, is the 1.8 ok?

Thank you

Not sure if that (1.8TSi) had the 7 speed dry DSG box. I think that was a problem. Others with far greater knowledge than me (that is everyone) will be along shortly to give a more managed view.:D

Worth a read...

If you can afford it find an Elegance, the SE is well specced but the Elegance is a nicer place to be!

Hi There.

1.8 TSI 118kw has a fairly good MPG and can be fun to drive.

However there are some main notorious things to be careful with:

- If you have CDAA engine (from year 2009-2011), then you will have a problem with oil consumption. How bad it is depends on the style how was the car driven. Problem comes from bad design of piston rings, which has been refined later on (Second half of 2011 ??). Combination of carbonization with long oil change intervals leads to the "destruction" of piston rings

and oil leak to the combustion chamber. Skoda has a "revised" set to replace these piston rings. (±1300 pounds job)

As far as I know BZB engines should be fairly ok

- Hydraulic tensioner has been problematic and will lead to the quite expensive destruction of the engine head. (±330 Pounds to replace chain, tensioner and stuff around)

- 7DSG - This is a dry version of DSG used in VW concern. It should withstand torque up to 250nm. This box do not like stop and go traffic and can and WILL overheat, leading to the "judger" when after shifting into 2nd gear from 1st one and going in slow pace. The clutches cannot engage 100% and torque flows inadequately, thus the juddering.

If you are willing to invest some money to have a problem free engine, then you can consider 1.8TSI.

I am an owner of 1.8 TSI 7DSG (only missing kessy and ventilated seats) and the car has been great, but required some love from my side as well in the last 20k miles and 1 year.

I had a BZB engined 1.8TSI Twindoor (58) up to 100k from 48k. Second most reliable car I've had after a Seat Toledo mk2.

I averaged 33MPG over the 52k miles I had it. My journey to work contains 21 roundabouts so isn't kind to economy! Tyre usage was over 3k better than previous diesel cars, quiet, happy to chase the red line and more agile than it should have been. Handles better than current TDI estate.

Stick to 10k services, use good quality oil and she should be good to go. Great last 2500 rpm to the limiter and would do 65mph in second which made for an easy entry to the motorway. Was a little torque light but made up for it with a fizzy top end.

I did have a dalliance with a 1.8TSI DSG7 for a while. That drank oil at the rate of 250miles to a litre! The 7 speed dry DSG isn't as nice as current 6 speed wet DSG and would kick down to far i.e. to 4th when 5th would have been better.

I do miss my 1.8TSI and would have had a 1.8TSI BZB DSG estate if I could have. But they changed to that nasty Audi engine that drank oil and didn't have the fizz and crackle or the BZB.
