DSG issues with 2005 Octvia diesel

Hi there, I have posted on your hellos forum and used your search function for ‘DSG AND 2005’ and sadly can’t find information that can help me out, so hope you don’t mind me writing a detailed post here.

I have an excellent condition Octavia DSG diesel that I have taken on from a friend to try and fix as it has broken down a number of times with a DSG fault where the gearbox lights flash and the car loses drive. I have taken it to a Skoda dealer who has recommended replacing the selector mechanism (S1K2713041A – see PDF at this address https://goo.gl/TpTnsL) The problem is this selector is £529.29 and the car is only worth £1300 and the technician only advised ‘this would be the first thing he would try’. There is also only one of these parts in the country's dealer network apparently! Obviously I’m after some guidance from yourselves as to whether this is indeed the right direction to take.

So I guess my questions are to try and confirm:

1) Is replacing this item first a wise course of action (I appreciate none of you have seen the car!) and are there any breakers who can find this item?
2) Are there any Skoda DSG specialists I can run this situation by?
