Aux Belt - always too long

Featured Replies

Hello

I am trying to fix the vbelt on my dads Fabia - a 2002 1.4 MPI. The none air-conditioned version.

Problem is the part we got from Eurocarparts is far too long. We have since gone to the skoda main dealer and that part is also far too long. The is the engine that has no auto tensioner - instead you adjust the alternator. Even when it is pushed out as far as possible there is still a few inches slack.

The skoda main dealer ordered that part based on the chassis number so I am at a loss as to what's going on. I don't believe I am fitting it wrong as it is very simple.

  • Both parts where for the none air conditioned.
  • Alternator has been adjusted as far back as possible - still too loose.

Do I have to manually measure it and order a customer part?

Do you have the old belt?

Hi Jivo,

Your old belt may still have dimensions on it, length obviously essential, but also width (and number of grooves if poly-VEE belt), ask around at good general carspares places, they may/should be able to match it. If belt already off, some places have a gauge that stretches belt over two pulleys, one fixed and one movable, this one slides along a scale, gives length you want.

thanks for the replies. Unfortunately the original belt was completed shredded and chucked. (the car broke down on the M4 and was towed to my drive).

I have measured the belt supplied by the skoda dealer and it is 122cm. By my estimation is was 8.5cm too long.

So the correct belt should be around 114.5cm

thanks - got to the bottom of it.

Although I saw this page before - having just clicked through and looked at it again - I realised I was looping the belt from top down, instead of from the back :-)

Massive user error but at least its done. Thanks for the helpful answers everyone.
