12v power sockets

Featured Replies

I have just bought a Superb estate....very pleased!

However on all previous cars the 12v supply sockets have been switched via the ignition. I was therefore able to use these for a dashcam without having to turn the camera on/off on every start up. It appears in the Superb the sockets are live all the time. Does anyone know please if they can be recoded to switch with the ignition?

Thanks

Welcome.

They've always been permanent live and I was in the same boat when I fitted a dashcam in my S2 using the 12v socket. Too many flat battery occasions when I forgot to unplug it.

The 12 volt feed is hard-wired so not something that can be coded.

Most people are using a piggyback from the fuse box located behind the glovebox.

Use a multimeter to determine which fuse is ignition switched or do a search on this forum using "dashcam" to see what others have already done - there are plenty of threads on the subject.

I am changing my dashcam for one which takes its power from the USB socket which I believe is ignition controlled. Please advise if this is wrong.

You'e not right but not entirely wrong either.

IIRC the USB socket is powered on/off by unlocking/locking the car.

This allows the USB to continue to be used with the infotainment when parked without the need for ignition being left on.

That should suit your purpose.

That's quite good but you wouldn't be able to connect your phone at the same time then :-(

True. I want the ability to record when the car's parked in public car parks as that's when it's most likely to get damaged by some hit-and-run numpty so I have a BlackVue dual dashcam waiting to be installed complete with a battery pack for when it's parked. I'll be using the fuse method as I don't like cables laying around loose or overtly visible.

Each to their own and if you only use the USB for charging your phone then a USB power adaptor in the unswitched 12v socket will do the same job leaving the switched USB socket available for a USB camera.

So long as people are aware that USB provides 5 volts and not 12 volts so only a kosher USB camera should be used with USB.

Which model number blackvue?

DR650S-2CH camera(s) and B-112 battery pack.

the blackvue will make the dab lose signal all the time i fitted one of these the same DR650s-2ch on my s2 when it was new and went back to the dealers and said the dab was faulty they ripped the roof lining out and fited a new arial but it was still intermittent. i then did a serch on internet and discoverd that this was a known problem so disconnected the rear cam and no more problem with dab reconected it again and it was back. this is only a problem if there is no fm alternative for the raido to switch to. because then the radio will  go dead. never told the dealer that they didn't have to rip the roof out of car all under warranty
