Window not very well connected to up &a down!

Featured Replies

Wednesday morning went to wind my drivers side window up after showing a pass when there was a loud mechanical bang as the window got to fully closed.

Wound it down or tried too and lots more mechanical noise to the point I thought the window would shatter. This all happened in under two to three seconds.

So took it to the dealers as the window would no go fully up, did that by the two hand method but would easily drop down. No security when leaving the car.

Knowing this time of year, lots of new cars going through the workshop and no courtesy cars available I did not hold out much hope of getting anything for a week to ten days.

Two days later brand new well specked Fabia until mine is fixed, which won't be until at lease the end of next week. Give the wife a chance to look it over.

I think that is good service.

I think it might be a new motor, gear drive and frame from the sound I was hearing.

Might ask them to bring forward the cam belt, water pump, four new alloy wheels (warranty) and a couple of other warranty items.

Btw My car is nearly five years old and still, just in the five year warranty.

The colder it gets, the more sluggish the windows on my Superb get. More so than on any other car. It goes away when I've driven for a bit and the interior has had the chance to properly heat up (the door cards aren't cold to the touch).

During autumn when I came back to the car from shopping, I opened the passenger side window all the way to air out the car. When I tried to get it back up again, it got stuck not much up from the bottom. I tried rolling down and up but it got stuck in the same position every time as if something was in its way (like if you had your hand through the window and tried to close it, but it stops to avoid trying to crush your hard). Since it was rather chilly and had a long motorway drive ahead, I tried to help the window past the point it was getting stuck at with my hands while my mate held the switch to roll up the window. Can't remember if it went past the point it got stuck at before or not but during that process there was a really loud snap and trying to operate the windows afterwards just gave a crunching sound. To me it sounded like broken plastic cogs crunching bits of themselves. Pretty sure the window didn't go up or down after that.

Scheduled repairs at an independent garage. Over the phone they said it was most likely the window mechanism cable. Dropped the car off, picked it up not much later and got a hefty bill for the window mechanism. Asked if that's common and they told me they have at least one VW group car in the shop every week during the colder half of the year with that issue, but was odd for a car this new to happen.

A month later I had to open the driver side window to operate a parking lot barrier gate. Everything seemed to function as normal. When closing the window, it was about 1-2CM from the closed position when I heard that same loud snap. Trying to operate the window gave that same terrible sound. Luckily the window was nearly up because the weather was even worse and I had to drive for over an hour. Took it back to the same place, got the same hefty bill for the window mechanism. Makes me wonder how much it does cost and if the cable can't be replaced separately (if it's sold so). I don't like prying plastic panels-trim and door cards, not very patient with such fragile bits. Now neither of the windows goes all the way into the door. If I remember correctly, before the whole glass sunk into the door but now they stick up just a teeny bit.

On any other car, if it has had time to warm up after a cold night and trying open the windows, the thin layer of ice they may have on the windows just separates from the surface of the glass but on the Superb it sticks firmly to the window. I get the sense that if I tried to hold the window switch on, the mechanism of the window would brake before the ice separates from the glass. Well, I did put some fancy nano protection on the car (alternative to waxing), which has helped the car stay clean. Great shine, keeps dirt from sticking to the car and water droplets easily slide off the car. I do wonder if it makes ice stick better to the car, though. It really seems to cling on.

Now I make sure to clean the windows very diligently of any ice and avoid opening the windows when the car is cold. I'd rather not open them at all. Once after a 20 minute drive I got pulled over and the window still didn't open, so I had to open the door and got asked if the window had frozen shut.

Never had those problems and mine was definitely not cold just a completely knackered whatever they find.
