Fuel tank cap

Featured Replies

Hello Folks, I have bought the Superb mk III about six months back.

What is the correct way to fully close the fuel tank cap after refuelling. Do we stop as soon as it appears fully closed or do we rotate it even further till it gives a sound.

The reason I'm asking is when I open the cap for fuelling there is a lot of accumulated gas which escapes. I am also getting petrol smell so I thought maybe I'm not closing the cap properly.

I always close it then let it click once.

Exactly what I was going to say!

I close it and let it click a few times.. Once you hear the first click its fully closed and it's the plastic ratchet you hear click

The noise and smell is simply petrol/gasoline vapour, which is normal. It's one of the reasons you are advised to open the cap slowly rather than in one sudden movement. If your cap wasn't closed properly, the vapour/gas would escape and wouldn't have had chance to build some pressure. ;)

And not at all surprising given the O.P.'s location.

Thanks folks. I was not getting the petrol smell earlier, it has started coming recently and this is what got me worried. I was thinking of closing the cap without the click, if that helps in releasing the vapours.

I have driven the Superb mkII for 5 years before switching over to the mkIII and never had this problem.

On all recent cars I have owned (VAG and others) I have always turned the cap until it clicks, seems logical to me.

The UK manual says:

"Close the fuel filler flap until it clicks into place"

Since Skoda know a thing or 2 about their cars I would suggest following their instructions. Leaving the cap slightly loose as you are suggesting doing is just plain daft and in an accident could result in you and others dying in a huge fireball.

Please be safe.

Don't leave your filler cap loose! It must be closed properly. Escaping vapour not only costs you money (petrol evaporates very quickly), but it's also a HUGE fire risk. Always make sure your cap is properly closed. Everything you have described is normal operation, don't worry about it.
