312mm brake upgrade

Featured Replies

Morning folks,

I'm after advice on part requirements for a 312mm brake upgrade to my 1.9 fl estate. Having trawled through the forums, going back over the years, I've noticed that S3 brakes come up quite frequently but also that some wheels do not fit when the 312 calipers are in place. The next fit will be bilstein b6's front and rear, 50mm on the front to match the currently fitted struts, but don't know if it's possible to fit 312's with 50mm struts or i've got to change to 55mm. The reason for the query is that most, if not all, 312 brakes come off of slightly more powerful cars which have 55mm struts. I've also come across concerns that the master cylinder may not be upto the job of supplying the calipers. Due to the importance of being able to stop, this is a mod I'm keen to get right!!

Any idvice on calipers/carriers that can be used and any info on anything to be aware of, greatly received.

You will need 55mm front hubs,  new carriers and calipers to fit 312mm discs + minimum wheel size will be 16" to clear the calipers.

Cheers for that. Didn't realise the requirement was for 55mm hubs. This might put an end to the 312 upgrade as the cost of replacing the hubs could be more than I would wish to spend. I take it that the rear hubs can stay as is?

You don't need to touch the rear hubs for front brake upgrade.  Cheapest option would be to source a whole front suspension leg from the breakers which includes the hub and the brakes, then you can probably just get away of with getting some new 312mm discs and pads.

Sounds like a plan.
