Space savers on the back: The theory?

Featured Replies

Would it be quicker on a 1/4 mile (marginally) dragging along a pair of space saver wheels, as opposed to a pair of wide 17s? :D

If so, anyone know a good place to get a pair of space saver wheels? ;) I already have a single 14" 185/60 R14 shod steel, but like the idea of dragging along a pair of 155 tyres. :D Think it would maybe help with the 1/4 challenge. ;)

In a straight line, I don't think the old recommended speed limit would be too necessary.

Any thoughts?

Why not get one of those foam punture repair jobbies. It would be a lot lighter than a steel spare wheel.

Not sure if it would upset the balance of the already nose heavy fabia?

I don't think punctures are the issue - I think he's trying to reduce drag (and weight?) by changing the wheels on the car for skinnier ones :D

Dont see it making any difference at all - probably more effective to put some more air in the rears.

Well, it would reduce rolling friction - hence drag races have skinny front wheels.

Would agree though, putting more air in the tyres to reduce the surface area in contact is probably the easier and cheaper solution... :D

Drag racers do put out a little more power than Jason's car though ;)

:finger::rofl: I just thought dragging along a set of space savers, pumped up to 40 PSI would help with drag. We might only be talking 1/10th of a second over a 1/4 mile, but I'm considering nearly all options. ;)

But surely you want your 1/4 mile figures to reflect "real world driving" - rather than cheating.

Isnt there a Fabia video here somewhere that shows one being thrashed down a country road on a space saver? Perhaps he'll know the answer.

Nope - I just want to show what it can do under friendly competitive conditions, hence why some here use track only tyres for trackdays.

I'm going to be simply going for the best it can do, without being 100% stupid. ;)

Lol that was me.

the spare on the furby is a full size.. not spacesava. (even tho it says its limited to 50mph)

Ah. So I really want a 14" steel with space saver on then? hmmmm. Mine came with a full size 14" spare - with same tyres as normal, so no speed limit recommended.

Think I might just say sod it, and have 20 PSI in the front and 40 PSI in the rears and leave it on 17s. :)

get some "belt grip" and spray it all over the front tyres to help you off the line ;)

Interesting. :D Looks like thats something that Halfrauds might do - usually reserved for belts in the engine apparently. :)
