Custom Dog cage for Octavia hatch (mk2) £200

Featured Replies

This would also fit the estate easily enough

I had a company called hamster baskets make me up a custom cage for my mk2 Octavia hatch - it's a coated mesh with damped spring connections and a spring bolted door to stop any rattles etc.

Fits very snugly up against the back seats, top of the cage about heights with the headrests, circa half  a the boot width used. stops very close to the glass (I deliberately had it made like this to maximise space) so it needs to be fitted in securely to anchor points in the car to keep your glass safe.

My crazy cocker used the cage but realistically you could use it for up to (small) lab size.

It then tapers down with the glass and stops roughly where the horizontal section of the hatch sits.

Will get some pictures up in the next few days - very well made bit of kit that also folds flat.

Cost me £265 plus delivery a year ago - will sell for £200 + delivery. Don't confuse this with one of the generic flimsy cages that can be bought.

Can provide measurements etc if you wanted to use in another car - realistically though it would have to be at least Octavia size - Mondeo is about the only other car i can think of or any Octavia/Superb estate etc

Exactly the kind of thing I'm after - unfortunately we'll be having a large Golden Retriever so I don't think half a boot will be enough room. Shame :(

GLWS.

Yeah sounds like you might be struggling a little if he/she's on the larger end of the scale - I think the tapered height would potentially be the main issue rather than the width though. Best thing to do might be to compare some measurements below with a crate that you think would be suitable size as that will give the best idea:

Rear width 51cm

Front width (tapers for the car corner) 46cm

Height 66cm (tapers up)

Total depth 87cm

Total depth at full height 45.9cm

dodgy drawing below (done in inches as this is what the company wanted):

Useful info, appreciate you sharing - thanks. I'm assuming the height will be ok, as the dog will eventually conclude he needs to lay down width wise across the car rather than length ways - which wouldn't be possible with this design, excellent way to preserve boot space though. My sledgehammer approach has been to fit some roof bars and am on the lookout for a roof box which will become my new boot :) (I'm sure my car actually tutted at me on Saturday after fitting the bars).

I would ideally like something in the back of the car which will keep the dog secure while the boot is open (while visiting non dog friendly people/places for example) - there is a company which will fabricate a cage style opening for the hatch but it's quite pricey and needs drilling.

Here's the alternative, the children my complain though:

Have you seen the inserts for the latch that will enable you to have a few inches of open boot whilst still letting the car lock? My cage came with one and they're only a few £'s

Yes, the 'VentLock' is the one I intend to buy, seems to be a half way house solution to providing ventilation - I keep meaning to measure the maximum gap I think will be possible for the boot lid to open to prevent escape, as there are a range of lengths available, but keep forgetting.
