3.6FSI noise when idling

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone!

I Bought 2009 Skoda Superb 3.6FSI few months ago.  I have been very happy with my car. It has exactly 100000 kilometers on the clock.

However, Now I have noticed that often when I let my car cool down for some time after driving and then start the engine again, it sounds slightly different than usually. This extra clattering noise does not exist usually if I cold start the engine after hours or if I restart it immediately after turning it off. The sound seems to be coming from the right side of the engine if I look the engine from front (left side of the car). If I drive it for few minutes and then stop listening to the engine, this sound is gone. Also sometimes it disappears after reving the engine slightly. However, vice versa, sometimes if this sound doesn't exist after starting the engine, it sometimes starts after touching the throttle pedal a bit. It NEVER keeps making this sound if I keep revs higher than idle, but comes usually back after releasing the throttle.

I recorded this video when I noticed this sound for the first time.

I'm worried about the timing chain... Could it be that some of the tensioners have become tired or something...  I planned to go to show the car to the local dealer as soon as possible but now i'm wondering should I drive it at all before that.

I'm very interested and thankful if you have some similar experiences that you could share with me! :) Would be good to know what others have done in this kind of a situation and what was the solution. Of course I hope it's not anything serious but if it is, I want to repair it before it causes any more damage to the car.

I tried to search for similar topic, but couldn't find so I made my own.

Best regards, arppa94

It's almost impossible to tell what a noise like this is going to be in my view. It sounds very loud in the video but I'd imagine that's down to the microphone on your phone! What I can offer is:

I had a rattle in my v6 at idle that I'd hear in the cabin. I initially never noticed it when the car was cold but I would once warmed up and stopped at traffic lights etc. After a while I stated to notice it when starting the car from cold, which I suspect was more due to my increased awareness of it rather than it getting worse.

It was very hard to tell where the sound came from exactly!

I had the car serviced on Tuesday, the first since I've owned it, at an independent specialist (who seem to be really good!). I never mention it but when I picked up the car, it was mentioned that they'd noticed the rattle and it's apparently a really common occurrence on these cars and is the fuel lines rattling. It's very hard to tell where it's coming from as the lines run through the chassis so it sounds like it's coming from everywhere and nowhere! Moving the fuel lines slightly, according to the garage, is the fix. Whatever they did, it's gone now!

I don't know if that's your issue but it might be worth asking your garage specifically about it.

Cheers,

Steve

Had a similar issue with fuel lines rattling and it nearly drove me crazy (and certainly drove the workshop crazy over several visits !).  They did find and sort it out in the end, but took a few attempts - manager demonstrated it was the fuel line by grabbing it and hanging on with the engine idling.

Good luck...!

Mark

  • 1 year later...

I've got a Superb 3.6 V6 that's making a similar noise. It started last year actually but then disappeared after a short while. Thanks for sharing the information guys. I'll be checking the fuel lines as I know it's not a major issue. Great engine though. One of VW's best for sure. Mine's done 204,000 miles plus and still pulls like a train. The only major thing to watch out for is changing the DSG gearbox oil every 40,000 miles. Haldex oil change for the 4x4 system every 40,000 as well. The previous owner of my vehicle did not pay attention to the DSG oil change and I had to change the mechatronic gearbox control unit. Cost? £2300 from a Skoda Dealer. Had to be ordered from Germany. The good thing is it's covered by a two year unlimited mileage warranty and I NEVER miss the oil changes!
