@*#%ing windscreen / lucky escape

Featured Replies

About a week and a half ago, a stone was thrown up by a van and it chipped my windscreen, leaving a small hole, and a 1cm-ish 'blister' between the layers of glass where air had got in. "No problem," I thought, because fixing it chips is free on my insurance, so as soon as I got into work, I set about sorting it. The following Monday, the guy from the 'appointed repairer' (mentioning no names) comes and tries to fill the chip. Was not impressed with his efforts, as there was still air between the layers of glass, and the little plug of resin he used to fill the chip had dried opaque. The guy was quite apologetic, but assured me that by fixing it, the screen won't be at risk of cracking, so it wasn't a total waste of time.

WRONG!!!

The chip had not formed into a crack over a weekend of relatively cold nights, but the morning after the repair, an 8-inch crack had developed.

So I called the windscreen people, and they agreed to sort me out with a new screen the next day, but I'd have to pay the excess on the gorunds that I couldn't prove that the screen wouldn't have cracked eventually if they hadn't have repaired it. Not impressed, but couldn't really argue and so agreed to stump up. So I order the correct screen (green tint with top-tint), and the next day another guy comes to fit it. Except a. there's no top-tint, and b. the new screen turns out to have a bigger crack in it than my one!

So I end up taking it into their workshop last Friday to get it sorted once and for all. And, yes, they manage to fit a new screen, and even better, it's the right one!

BUT, my tax disc (which I'd taken out of the holder specially) is nowhere to be found! So I'm now driving around in a car with no tax disc until my duplicate comes through in the post :thumbdwn: Only

Although a comedy of errors, at least you have a new screen. I can't imagine having to drive and all the time wondering if a screen would "go" at any minute - far too stressful.

Re the DVLA, you can email them for assurance that you won't be fined for non-display of your disc. I think they can flag your reg to stop fines (if they haven't already). They normally respond to emails IMO in about 24-48 hours.

Thanks Mo - I didn't know you could do that  I sent the forms recorded delivery, so if they haven't got there yet, I'll send them an email...
