Discs & Pads prices etc.

Featured Replies

My car has done just over 88k miles (around 200 shy of the 88888 mark).

I'm still on the original discs and pads. Car is currently being serviced and I've been informed that front discs are showing signs of corrosion and that I should be looking to replace everything - discs and pads.

I knew this day was coming, however I'm going to have to push it back to another pay day before getting them done :)

I was quoted £227 for everything to be done. Is this a fair price or can I do better?

If I can find a garage willing to fit my supplied parts - what make of discs should I be looking for?

Pagid, Bosch & ATE are appearing on my initial search for discs. What make of pads should I be looking for?

Other searches have Eicher as the cheapest option...

Cheers.

ive fitted Pagid discs and pads to all 3 of our cars,(pug, renault and skoda) in the last 12 months. no problems at all, good quality. bought from Euro Car Parts.

£227 sound pretty reasonable. What brand parts are they using in their quote? When I did mine, the cheapest I could find a decent brand set of pads and discs was about £130 for Mintex. Then a few accessory kits for springs clips front and rear, and sleeve seals which I didn't use as existing ones were ok, and you are probably talking £145 in parts.

Probably due fluid change too unless you've been doing that.

Bosch, Pagid and ATE are all decent products. I'm happy with the Mintex performance I have on so far, but should of painted the outer hub part with some silver as it oxidises straight away and looks a bit LowFi.

My local VAG specialist fitted front AND REAR discs and pads for £205.40p .  Local Skoda dealer wanted over £500!

They are the only things that stop you, without a degree of pain anyway.......

Yes, true, "cheapest" probably not my best choice of words. Think I used it following the OPs use of the word in the initial post...

With brakes, I tend to only use makes I've used before (at one stage I must have not used any before but that is a long time ago now), so I tend to use items such as Bosch, Mintex, Pagid, so I have some confidence in what I am getting. It is then a matter of choosing the item or items that can be obtained most economically.

I was just trying to put into context the OPs total price of the work taking into account the parts cost I could obtain, which at total cost of work of £227 and philbes at £205 both of which seem very reasonable, dare I say it.... cheap. Ooops I mean economical and thrifty...

Don't go any where near Eicher, they are cheap crap, The price you have got is quite good for front and rear's. The rear's can sometimes be pain to change as the piston's in the calipers can sieze so you can't wind them back, so you may need to budget for some new rear calipers I'd also budget for a brake fluid change as it should be done every two years regardless of miles, it does make a huge difference to feel from the brake pedal as well.

I reckon TPS do 4 plus/economy for about £80 disks and pads. I fitted my own Octy 2 recently, so no labour charge. Even if you got a non franchise garage to do it, Surely it's not going to be more than £150 all in, right?

I have noticed the dealers are very OTT when it comes to brakes. They need to cover themselves, but it all depends on how you use them and also how they have been wearing i.e. Sometimes one side or an inner pad can wear more. Hard to check this without wheels off first. Up until recently I always found plenty "meat" in pads once taken off on all our cars. I chance them a little more and keep a close eye now.

The thumb-up was to your mentioning "decent brand", bud, or at least decent quality.

Just a nod to the OP to buy decent / genuine stuff, as he mentioned cheapest, as you say.

Nothing wrong with buying the cheapest so long as they are good quality ones, and if you shop around (possibly not inc ebay unless genuine) sometimes you can find quality stuff cheaply.

Expensive doesn't always equal quality either.

Hi All

Those days i decide to change front/rear pads and disks + drive shafts. I was quoted 580 all togheter ( A1 Motors Services  - Stonehouse )

Is that ok or its high.

What was your experience  ? Any garage to recomend ?

I am based in Swindon .

Thanks in advance.

All depends on the disks and pads they use you can buy a set of disks for 40 quid but they will probably last about 6 months and the cheaper pads tend to be really hard for wear but not stopping power, you pays your money and takes your chance, unless you specify on the parts they use, NEVER scrimp on brakes and tyres!!!!!!!!    just paid nearly £300 for pads and disks for the front and  i`ll fit them myself  but a decent garage should  easy be  able to do each side  an hour , 2 hours labour is about right plus parts
