Symphony Car Radio - "Surface" when inserting CD-RW

Featured Replies

Hello everyone!

I own an Mk1 Octavia with a Symphony unit and a 6-slot CD changer in the trunk.

Currently I'm using all 6 slots, in each of them sits a CR-R disc. I can play all of them without having any problems, none of them are "original" CDs. Last time I burnt a CD-RW, which was brand new - it played on my laptop, on my PC, in my '14 Rapid with no issues at all. When I put it into the Octy it gave me the "Surface" message. Tried all slots multiple times, cleaning the disk, putting only the desired disk into the changer, then with other 5 discs = "SURFACE".

Everything works flawlessly, except this one.

What may cause the problem? All the tracks are .mp3, and as far as I know they have a 320kbit/s bitrate (just like the other 2 albums on 2 separate disks).

Thank you for your answer in advance! Have a nice day! )

CD-RW's have a smaller difference in reflectivity between burnt and unburnt areas than a CD-R - which makes them harder to read, especially by a laser that has dropped in efficiency after several years use as in your Mk1 Octavia.

I'll try to see what can I do, maybe blow it with a compressor or just keep on trying.

Can you suggest anything more?

Thank you for the fast reply by the way!

Only "cures" are not to use CD-RW or fit a new laser (if they are available), cleaning the laser will as best be only a temporary solution if it works at all.

Yes I like the 1.4TSI, it's only got 1/3 of the bhp of my previous car but the change doesn't feel that great because of the decent amount of torque.
