Second variable service 2.0 tdi 184

Featured Replies

Hello all.

I haven't been here are a while since selling by Fabia vRS but I have been driving around in Seat Leon FR 184 for the last year or so. So very similar to diesel vRS, and since you all seem like sensible people I thought I'd ask a service question here....

The Leon is due its second variable service, and Seat want £279 as it is classed as a Major Service (every two years / 20,000 miles). Is this about right?

The service history is as following

   Oct 14 - first registered

   July 2016 - 19,000 miles longlife service

   Nov 2016 - 25,000 air filter change (self-service)

June 2017 - 37,500 miles car says oil and inspection service is due

The major service may include fuel filter, air filter replacement but these will not be done until 4 years or 60,000. So what is the benefit of a major service (£280) over a minor service (£170)? The oil is the same for minor / major and minor service is also classed as an inspection service.

Seat are unhelpful, and no-one seems to be able to give a definitive answer other that pay our dealers as much money as possible... Should have stuck to fixed servicing as at least it makes sense.

Thanks

Tim

You've discovered the con that is minor / fixed vs. major / variable servicing.

You are correct in that the only difference between the minor and major service is the air, fuel and pollen filter BUT these are only changed at around the 3 year / 60,000 miles mark.

Therefore anyone paying the £269 (Skoda fixed price servicing) on a car less than 3 years old or 60,000 miles is being ripped off. All you ever get for your money is oil, oil filter and a quick visual check of brakes, tyres and lights etc.

By all means book it in for the major / variable service but if they can't guarantee that they'll replace all the filters tell them that you therefore only want them to perform the minor / fixed service or you'll pay no more than the £149...

Thanks Silver, that's what I thought. Fuel and air filter aren't changed until 60,000 miles, so the major service is basically the same as the minor service until that mileage is reached. And, I only replaced the air filter 6 months ago.

I'll book it in for the minor service which will easily get me beyond October and the end of the warranty. Then its off to find a friendly local independent for the next service.

Thanks again.
