No gears!

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

Whist driving away from traffic lights and changing gears, I lost all of them! I didn’t hear anything when I released the clutch apart from the engine revving. Although the car is 11 years old, it has only done 40K so I doubt that the clutch has gone and I have just checked the gear selector linkages which appear to be OK. This leads me to suspect that the problem may be due to the clutch master cylinder which has failed (there is no hydraulic fluid leaking). I would be grateful if anyone has experienced the same problem and, if so, do you think it could be caused by a failed clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder or something else.

Many thanks, Jack

So when it's in gear and the clutch pedal is up there is no drive - the engine just revs?

And what model/engine is it?

I have had the clutch hydraulics fail twice (slave cylinders) and both times the clutch pedal goes to the floor and stays there (does not return to the correct upward location).

If your clutch pedal feels normal then I suspect it's not the hydraulics that are your problem.

Cheers TMB and duck,

The Fabia is a 1.2 petrol 2006. Yes, when I dip the clutch and put it into gear, there is no drive and the engine just revs. I have just tested dipping the clutch after I clamped the flexible hose to the slave cylinder. There was greater resistance but the clutch pedal did reach the floor and did not return until I released the clamp.

Could be drive shaft / flange spines. Not uncommon on vag stuff and an easy fix.

puddy :)

Yeah get someone to see if either of the driveshafts is turning when there is no drive.

Thanks for your replies. I'll put the air filter/battery back in on Friday and carry out your suggestions to see if they can cast a better light on the cause of the problem.
