Help! Mk2 VRS Airbox woes

Featured Replies

Hi ya'll.

I popped my airbox off to check the airfilter & when taking it off I noticed it had a slight wobble.

When I inspected it the holes at the back of the box that sit on the two seals(?) at the back of the engine it puzzled me, as I'm sure that there isn't meant to be a bit sheared off where the hole is. It's got a (for an airbox) gaping hole there where someone has pulled it off & snapped some plastic away. No idea how long it's been there as I assume the PO - whenever they last changed the filter - wrenched the top box off of the engine & snapped that part. Is dirt ingress going to be a problem there?

I'm struggling to find a replacement that's not stupid £££ & all the aftermarket induction kits I find are just the cone filter, no piping or MAF port.

So the question is do I attempt to repair it, get a new box, or can someone point me towards a reasonably priced induction kit that has all the gubbins I need?

Edit for spelling

what engine is it? diesel or petrol ..what year? any photos

Sounds like the holes in the airfilter box housing with the rubber grommets have broken away from the rest of the casing? There are usually two or three plastic studs or metal studs that press into the rubber grommets in the airbox. They are a tight fit and you need to wiggle a little and pull up from memory. If someone has forcibly yanked it out then it has probably broken either the studs or the airbox or both.

This is for a FL petrol EA888 engine, but imagine some of the set up is pretty common across FL and maybe before too.

The rubber grommets and press stud set up is to give the airbox some movement.  Unless the airbox is compromised with a hole in it, or is very loose and rattling, I wouldn't worry too much.  When I first got my car I enquired about some airfilter box torx screws as mine are a little corroded. They couldn't help with those unless I bought the complete airbox assembly from memory £100 plus vat.....

"Rubber bushing" would be an even better description than "rubber grommets", in my above reply.

This is for the mk3 but looks pretty similar to my mk2 set up and first photo gives you the idea of the set up and the second photo shows you the studs.

Sorry it's a petrol, 2007.

Yes the rubbers are off (oh matron), sadly. Probably means £50 for a used part then.

That also explains a lot with regards to a mysterious rattle. Only one rubber bush remains! At least that's that diagnosed.
