Skoda Columbus white screen

Featured Replies

After updating my coloumbus successfully. The screen is just displaying a white screen of death. Nothing can get out not even <+>+i.

I think it's bricked I found a website that repairs that fault for £120-£200. Does anyone recommend a good technician. I will have to send by mail as I'm in Jersey.

Will I be able to drive the car without the unit in? Is there any precautions to take when removing the Columbus? I hear there is a airbag connection or something. I don't want anything else to go wrong, I'm not having much luck with this car so far.

I'm guessing the Columbus is an early unit with a speaker & i button on the top right rather than a microphone button? If so then for a white screen fault it's usually the screen board which fails and needs either resoldering or new board. But as this happened with a software update then I don't think that'll be the problem here, so sounds more like a mainboard fault. Give me some more info on the unit please.

Cheers.

Edit. As regards removing the unit in a Superb, there's usually an airbag warning light in the fascia surround. You can either leave the surround connected to the wiring and carefully work round it to remove the Columbus, or you can unclip the airbag light connector and remove the Columbus, but don't turn the ignition on with it disconnected or you'll get an airbag warning fault which will require VCDS or diagnostics to reset it.

It's a early model like you said, speaker and I button.

HW version H03

SW version 3974

In that case there's not much I can do with it. I can't get hold of any spares any more, and I don't touch them due to not being able to offer any guarantees on repairs.

However, we'll explore the possibilities of software first. What software (specifically) did you try and load onto it. If it's a link to a site where you downloaded it then please pm me, it's not unknown for some downloads to be deliberately faulted so that people who use them need to send the unit away for repair, conveniently (possibly) to the person who provided them with the dubious download.

I loaded 4020 first which worked. Then i tried 5xxx which messed everything up. Can't eject the DVD out. Could I prize the DVD out with some long nose pliers? And re-insert a fw disk?

You can't force the disc out I'm afraid. It can be ejected with RNS510 service tools but not VCDS (I'm fairly certain). I've a feeling if you can get the disc out then you might be able to run another disc, but then again it could be that you've killed the main board with the update attempt. I've had them before where it's happened, and it's the end of the line for the unit really. The white screen is not the usual white screen fault which is purely a screen issue, this is a symptom of further problems way beyond that.

If you want to send me the unit I'll have a look, but no promised on a fix. If it can be repaired with a software fix then it's certainly going to be cheaper then the £200 ish you've been quoted. If it's dead then you've lost nothing really.

Just off out to work now, so I'll be back later and have a talk then.

And where did you get the softwares from?
