car requesting an oil change

Featured Replies

The dash has just popped up that it wants an oil change. But it was last serviced in oct last year and will only have done 5k or so since. Should it need this quite so soon?

I have to take the car in next week for them to fix the windows but i imagine an oil service  is going to be a daft price for, well just and oil and filter change.

Any ideas how much?  ETA 150 seems to be the menu price

Thanks

If it was set on Fixed Servicing it would be 9,400 miles / 372 days to the next fixed service.

So what car / engine is it, and do you know what oil was put in and did the Service Indicator get reset last October to 9,400 miles / 372 days to next service.

£139 is not just an Oil & Filter Service, there is looking and seeing and checking and there should be road testing and reporting,

and a Free Wash & Vacuum then some Upselling,  maybe a advisory on rusting disc, brakes worn etc.  need for a A/C service etc.

63 plate vrs estate. It certainly hasn't done 9.4k miles nor has it been I don't know if it is one fixed or variable servicing - it was on the 3 year paid for service plan from new it that makes any difference. The oct service was the third.

I imagine they don't do just an oil change do they?

So you can not trust what was supposedly done in October and that the Oil & Filter was changed if maybe the car was on Variable Servicing back then.

Have you no Service Record or Invoices,

If no Service Book check what Skoda UK has on the system for Main Dealers Servicing.

The car was due the Brake Fluid changed at 3 years old.

The Air Filter might be due a change if not done last year, or ever.

Pollen Filter needs checked as well, maybe changed or at least cleaned.

Check if Spark Plugs were ever checked / changed.    So basically the car needs servicing quite possibly because a Service Plan is no guarantee of things replaced,

or even checked.

I have a 2010 1.6 diesel Fabia. Since the last garage service 4 years ago I have changed the oil and filter when the warning light appears. It is now an annual event as I only drive about 6000 miles a year. The oil change is easy to do. I have a large socket spanner to fit the filter housing which you have to avoid over-tightening. There is a torque figure marked on the plastic cover. The socket and a long drive rod make the removal and replacement easy.

I usually take of the sump plastic cover to access the drain plug on the back of the sump. Remove it to let the  (ideally warm) oil drain and go and have lunch or at least a cup of tea.

The oil has to meet a VW code 9507 from memory). The oil must have a low ash content to avoid damaging the DPF. Mobil and Millers and I think Comma  all make an oil which meets this code. Needless to say, they are all quite expensive - about the same as a tank of fuel so not a fortune.

The procedure for resetting the warning light is described somewhere and involves holding down the miles setting button while turning on the ignition and then holding the button for about another 5 seconds.

The Op says his car is a 63 plate vRS, so if that is a Fabia vRS it will be a petrol engine.

The quantity is 3.6 litres, the Oil filter is at the top of the engine and the oil can be sucked out the dipstick tube.

5w 40 Full Synthetic oil to VW 502 00 is perfect for Fixed Servicing, and Variable would be VW504 00 Full Synthetic Long Life / 5w 30.

but since a 1.4 TSI Twincharger best not use the long life oil and change annually or at 9,400 miles.  5w 40 VW 502 00 being perfect.

WARNING

. DO NOT LEAVE A 1.4 TSI's OIL JUST DRAINING AND THEN EXPECT THAT THERE WILL BE NO ISSUES WITH THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER.

Be careful of advice that might cost you thousands of pounds if there is a failure resulting from others advice.  (including mine....)
