Towing...

Featured Replies

... Just realised I've NEVER towed anything before.

Any hints and tips. Thanks.

I kind of assume its like the time I carried about 400kg of cement in my car - Easy does it, gently with the clutch and make sure you go nice and slow. :)

What are you towing and what are you towing it with ?

Another car, not too big a one, with a towing eye to towing eye connecting metal towing rod type thing. :) Oh, and using my car.

You know as I posted this thread I thought, "I Bet Mr Octygone will reply first" :D And you did. :)

generally it takes longer to do everything...longer to speed up longer to slow down ..etc. etc. so leave plenty of space ...look further ahead for problems and be aware of the overall length of what you are driving when pulling out on to roundabouts and such like and take it easy ...get used to it gradually and if a queue forms behind (5 or 6 cars) pull over and let them pass

Am I that predictable

Yes! :P

Assuming the towing arm is very flexible, the car being towed will be on to assist in steering/braking. So in theory the only time I'll notice it is when accelerating. :)

And its only a tiny journey. Don't know why I'm fussing.

Off to pack for the weekend now.

If there is a bit of slack in the towing bar/rope ...to start with raise your arm when you are going to change gear so the person behind can see ...and then he can just gently apply the brake a little to keep the bar/rope tight......works for me

the towing bar is a rigid metal bar, kinda like the sort of thing the AA use...

I'm sure we'll be fine, only thing is I know the way to pod, not sure if you do?

Having towed the 220 a few weekends ago (my first time towing a car) I will say this. Really make sure the rope stays a tight as possible, like rob said when you change the the car your towing will catch up on you, so if you can give a warning of gear change it will help the person you are towing. I'd also have the window down on the car that is being towed that way s/he can hear if your changing gear.

Oh and make sure you get a good tow rope, mine snapped twice on the journey back (about 20 miles).

Have to say the fabia tow with no problems, tried towing with the uncle's barged and that really had to work to got the 220 moving.

Also check your mirrors a fair bit and watch out for the idiot that dont realise that your towing someone and try and come between the rope!
