1.2 TSI 2016, Engine Tap & scraping sound

Featured Replies

I've got two issues which I think are unrelated, the first being a tappy engine. I noticed today on idle the engine is noisy and tappy I can get a video later, I know these engines are known to be a bit noisy but wasn't sure if it could be anything else? It sounds louder than I would expect a modern engine to be.

The scraping sound I can't quite put my finger on, I can only hear it with the windows down and slower speeds. I'm not sure where it's coming from but it sounds like it's towards the rear. It's like metal rubbing lightly, but it isn't always there and doesn't increase with speed - however it does only happen when the car is moving. It sounds like it could be the brakes but I would have thought it would be all the time.

I'm waiting on a call back from the dealer, but was curious if anyone had any ideas?

Thanks

Mine is also tappy. Its likely just the hydraulic tappets filling with oil when you start up. Mine taps for about 15 secs then goes quiet. Also these engines are direct injection, so they are quite loud.

However mine is being serviced in 2 weeks time, so I'll mention it to the service tech, as it has got worse. Car is a Sept 15, now at 10k miles.

Oil is topped up towards the max, is yours topped up? When was it last serviced?

The metal rubbing will be the rear brake disks. They do rub slightly, especially after its rained and the disks have a film of rust on them. A couple of hard braking sessions or a bit of handbrake soon clears it. Nothing to worry about.

The tapping hasn't happened again since and the oil level was ok, it was serviced before I picked it up. The scraping is still occurring, tried a few hard braking attempts and dragged the hand brake a short distance but it's not stopped that sound. The dealership have been a bit useless but should be finally speaking to the right person on Monday to get it looked at. I will keep you updated thanks.
