What to look out for on a used Yeti?

I currently have an Octavia diesel TDI 110 which has been brilliant and very reliable but may now have to think about a replacement.

 

I am considering the Yeti 2.00 CR 110 Diesel ES front wheel drive. Reliability and economy is the most important thing for me. I will not be going round corners on two wheels. I would probably be aiming for a used 4-5 year old average mileage vehicle so around 50-60,000 or so on the clock.

 

Is there a thread or sticky that covers the known weak points and things to look out for on a used Yeti?

 

If not, any feedback would be really helpful.

Its a decent and reliable car, although the fix could cause issues so look for one away from the skoda network which has not been done.

You may have a dmf failure imminent at that mileage, although more recent cars seem to have been improved.

May have issues with the zinc coating to the doors blistering and developing into rust.

I would recommend you find a Greenline. Mine was reliable and reasonably economical.

Try and find an Elgance Greeline for best combination of trim and equipment with economy.

There are quite a few ex company ones as CO2 limits forced peoplelike myself to go for this engine but still want best equipmwnt level under company schemes.

It rides 26mm lower but still has a good ground clearance.

When you say 'the fix could cause issues' what exactly do you mean. Sounds sinister!  Or are you referring to the problems you highlighted concerning the DMF and doors or something else. On the engine size, I originally considered the 1.6 but i was talking to someone in the trade who reckoned they were not as reliable as the 2.0 litre. Can't exactly remember the reason he gave. Could be worth checking though.

I am not aware of any issues with the 1.6, indeed still have one of these in wifes fabia.

 

Read the E189 upate post and decide if you want to buy one from the Skoda network which wil hae had this update "fix" done, or try and find one pivately or from another dealer without the update.

Personally I would not buy one with the fix done, although there are some recent posts where it has been reversed or remapped to get it back to how it was designed

if you do find a car that you like and its had the EA189 "upgrade" done, Unit 18 in Milton Keynes can put it back to how it should be, well worth doing.

I had mine done on Friday and its a different car now.

Kitten and I will shortly be heading for the Kodiaq, so our faithful Yeti is on the market if you're interested.

 

its a 2010 2.0L 4x4 Auto with the DSG gearbox.

 

It will be 7 years old at the beginning of Sept but has done LESS than 32.000 miles.  (31,040 or thereabouts)

 

Regularly services using genuine Skoda parts.

 

comes with the rough road package, panoramic sunroof, and the Bolero 6 CD unit

 

It was the FIRST engine in the UK to be x4x with the DSG auto gearbox back in 2010 as we wanted the 4x4 auto with DSG but in Feb 2010 when we enquired about the car originally that engine combination simply was not available.

 

We finally ordered the car on 26 May 2010 when we heard that it was just on the market, and we drove it home from the dealers on 1st sept in the same year.

 

We have had the emissions fix done in early July, but never experienced and issues.

Any car with the emissions fix applied to it is not worth buying. There may not be evident short term issues with some cars, but there will be long term issues!

Buying a car with the fix applied to it is like buying a money pit.

 

I suggest you take a look at the owner's club forum for the Yeti to see how many issues there have been with the emissions fix.

I have the precise model you are looking into.

it's been with us for about 2/3 of it's 105k km life,

it's a 2012, and has not had any issues, (aside from my mother in law doing something strange to the clutch.

it still works and I've totally gotten over it, but she is not someone who "feels" what a car is doing and kerbed it and would generally abuse the left pedal.)

 

in general, they seem very solidly built, and replacement parts are not expensive.

the usual, make sure it hasn't been crashed and repaired

look for paper work that proves it has been maintained and not just words.

Thanks for your input. I want to make sure I get a good one if poss. I know exactly what you mean regarding human v machine. I once watched someone trying to park a small hatch back. They clearly had no concept of the idea that when you reverse you turn the wheel in the opposite direct when going forward. It was painful to watch. It went on and on, a series of semicircular manouevres, back and forth and going nowhere. In the end, they compromised and abandoned the car in a semi completed manouevre. Clearly not attuned to such things but it does beg the question how they managed to pass their test or even worse, were allowed on the roads in the first place ! Menace in the making...
