Found this run down of the performance/comfort/noise differences between 17", 18" and 19" wheels/tyres, based on a golf and the same size as those on the Octavia

Interesting, but what was missing was poor road surface testing.   

 

What people are usually looking for in the 'comfort' mode is more about the road surface than anything else.    What I've found is that too big a profile can lead to a very bouncy ride, but the in vogue rubber band profiles have no compliance at all and lead to a very harsh ride and frequent damaged tyres/wheels.

 

What might be interesting is some sort of assesment of the behaviour of the tyre when thought of as a poorly damped spring.
