AC fan not working

Featured Replies

Just been out in our Fabia to help a friend who's tree is falling down. On the way home the AC fan was silent.

Stopped and check fuse 39 and was fine. Climate control panel responds to inputs and I can hear the servo flaps moving.

I presume that it's the fan being a bugger. Anything else to check?

Is it thee climatronic? (Fully automatic, digital with around 7 speeds, not the dial with 4)?

Firstly, check you have not turned the speed dial so low, its off or nearly off though!!!

If you set a high speed, nothing happens, it sounds to me like the fan may have packed up. The semi automatic ones (Climatic) Have a resistor that very often fail and can be replaced if somewhat a little fiddly to the uninitiated. DIY with an aftermarket resistor, around a tenner, genuine part around £50. The drawback however, if you have the climatronic, is the fan replacement is a full dash out job, with half a day labour plus a fairly expensive fan... Don't expect change from £500!

After driving around a few weeks in hot weather, the money spent will seem worth it so better sooner then later!

Also, If you DONT repair it, turn the whole lot off as you may damage other parts.

Well been out again tonight and had a good look. It appears as the dash is all one piece these days and so you can't get the blower out without major surgery.... D'oh!

Neighbour had a look whilst I had my head under there (mechanic and done stuff like this several times over). He gave the old smack it and it started turning slowly. Seems warn bushes is most likely the cause.

He's gonna talk to a few friends who work at Skoda dealers and see what's best way to do it and offered to do it with me on the drive.

It's got to be done as at this time of year we need to ensure that the screen can be cleared.

I did scan the car and got a 01273 error. No other errors thankfully.

I am guessing you have the climatronic then?

The other version can have the resistor pack changed via the air bag hole. (Remove glovebox to access and remove airbag assembly, remove sound insulation or move it aside, change resistor pack and re-fit. All with battery disconnected, it needs to be said). Take great care not to fire off the air bag.

Just an update to this. It's all fixed.

Dash did have to come out to fix. Soda dealer miss quoted us and we ended up getting it done for £328! Wife stuck to her guns and got them to honour it.

It's much quieter now!

Thats a good price considering the dash removal etc... I think the fan comes in at around that at a main dealer on a climatronic system...

I think the invoice was £140 + VAT for the motor!
