2.0 Tdi vrs major running issues

Featured Replies

Right, hopefully someone can help. My son acquired my pre face lift 06 vrs Tdi 170 in December. The car now has 130k on its clocks. He's recently serviced it and fitted a cam belt. The car has been faultless for the whole time he's owned it until this morning. Car started no problem this morning, 1 mile into his journey the yellow oil level light flashed up. Thinking the level was a little low he carried on. The light was flashing on and off for another mile or so then started running really badly. Engine sounded really noisy and juddering. Very hesitant on the throttle. Idle was a little bit high but not really rough. The car got him to work where he parked it up and left it until dinner time. Tried to start it and spinning really fast ( like low compression ). It eventually started but again running rough. The engine oil light hasn't came back and NO fault codes are stored. Help!!

Did he check the oil when he got to work?

Not the dreaded balance shaft issue? Was it deffo the oil level warning and not pressure?

What did you use to scan the codes?

It was the yellow/Amber oil light so iir that's level? He did check the oil he said it was a little low but still on the dipstick. Topped that up. He is an apprentice mechanic so he used a snap on reader I think but not certain. He asked me to ask for help on here as he's a bit stumped with it at the moment as there is no fault codes and doesn't know where to start. He thought I'd know straight away with me owning it previously but I've no idea. It's now taking an age to fire up and he's worried about compression as he's saying it's turning over way to fast!! I've kind of settled him a little bit as I'm sure I've read about injectors not firing below a certain rpm.

I've also read about issues with poor batteries. He's going to test that tomorrow. What's this issue regarding balance shafts?

Not on the Octavia, that was only an issue on Mk1 Superb and other larger platform VAGs such as Passat, A4 etc.

Bit of an update but no progress. He started the car today and it took a good two or three minutes cranking over until it started. On firing up the red oil light popped on so engine was turned off straight away. We suspected a pump failure or at the very least a blocked strainer. However, sump removed and strainer was very clean considering it's mileage. Removed oil pump and inspected internally and again looked very well indeed considering 130k miles. We also had a good look at the oil and no filings or nasties.

The only thing we seen that looked odd was what looked like brass in the strainer. A little like a coiled spring but couldve been stripped threads possibly? Any help fellas?

Also tested battery and tested ok. Just under 13v before start up.

Pure guess cam shaft wear?

It's possible. I would be surprised if the camshafts were goosed though.

Which engine do you have? (as in the engine code)

Not too sure about the code. It's the 170 pd pre face lift. No dpf and mapped.

Little update. As I previously mentioned, the cam belt was changed 300 miles ago so as the car has been fine for the previous 13k miles we decided to check the timing. It seems the tensioner has came loose. The bolt threaded into the head that the tensioner bolts to has stripped it's threads. The bolt is an M8 and apparently Audi do a M10 as it's a common issue. Fingers crossed no engine damage has happened. I'll keep all updated.
