gearbox oil

Featured Replies

Read several posts but they are making me dizzy - Need to change gearbox oil on 2005 octavia 1.9tdi estate  5 speed  - my mechanic says his computer tells him  2 litres of 75w90 synthetic - i go to motor factors to get the same and they tell me Oh we dont use that anymore its been known to damage gearboxes  we now use something called 75+ think he said made by comma . He added the diference you will notice is that the new oil is very thin pretty much like auto trans fluid . I was wondering with my gearbox being rther old and worn 260.000 miles that it would benefit from thicker not thinner oil to take up any slack due to wear in components . Any advice very welcome.

Easiest thing to do would be to ring up skoda dealer and ask them you can probably buy the correct oil from them can’t go wrong then

apart from probably paying vastly more for a similar thing .I do buy most of my parts from TPS (subsidiary of VW ) all genuine prts but some things can be found far cheaper for equal quality.

lots of parts suppliers dont seem to have a clue - how often have you been given the wrong part after giving reg number - System is ony as good as the opertors knowledge in using it. I was given wrong fuel filter a couple of weeks ago and i m often told i need a different oil thn the one i request and have used for 100.000 miles of oil changes

Having just bought 5 litres of Quantum 507 from TPS for £15.75 I think oil prices from TPS are pretty reasonable so I'd give them a chance first.

yes i do use TPS most of the time for most items i get Taxi trade prices but some things are much more expensive TPS admit they cant compete often with eurocarparts for clutches and its exactly same make and spec

Thanks for that wiilydog, pretty sure the parts man said it was comma brand that they reccomended for Audi volks skoda, not sure if the one you reccomend is available local to me , need it monday am mechanic will have car to change front w/bearing

The mineral and synthetic gear oils are the same spec as far as I remember. In general it's synthetic for the 6 speed boxes and mineral for the 5 speed.

There is a code on the bottom of the gearbox that Skoda HQ use to tell you exactly the oil required.
