Home Audio Amp Output connections???

Featured Replies

Wondering wether to try different connection with following set up..........very simply

Front speakers are bi wired 6 ohm Hf and 6 ohm Lf.

My amp has two outputs for front speakers............A or B @ 6 to 16 ohms

                                                                               or       A B @ 12 to 16 ohms or more.

At the moment both front speakers are connected to one set of front outputs (A) but i am wondering if i can utilise the other output (B) to make the fronts Bi amped (sort of).

Would the 6 ohm Hf and the 6 ohm Lf of each speaker equate to match the minimum 12 ohm of the amps (A+B output? (logic tells me yes - but not sure).

If anyone can answer this I would be grateful.

you might blow the speakers....as if the total rating for the front speakers (total of all cones/cross-overs) is the rated 6ohms then allowing it to draw double that amount might fry something...

edit:-

No you might not fry the cones as you are only asking 6 ohms from a supply of 12 ohms....maybe other side effects though...

personally Bi-wired is fine but bi- amping I only see fit for big drivers & separate mono block amps..

Technical answer - MAX power transfer ( occurs within a limited range) where input impedance = output impedance. e.g. amp output impedance =8 ohm, speaker =8 ohm, then max transfer occurs, and there are no nasty reflections back into the amp.  Most amps are protected, but some are not, and it could lead to nasty amp smoke. ( this was a well used tactic way back in the days of illegal CB- simple removal of aerial and quick transmit blew output transistors, making set legal as it could not transmit) .
