New to this hoping someone can help,

a friend of mine has a fabia 1.4 diesel went and took a look at it for her and when try to start makes a bad grinding noise I believe to be a starter motor issue, I also noticed that the engine management light on and also the glow plug light which continues to flash. When I get it to start drove it back these lights continued to stay the same, any one that has had a similar issue that could advise would be much appreciated.

Might be exhaust system fault, either DPF full or EGR valve jammed so starting may be tricky and driving will eventually, if not already, throw the car in to limp mode.
