2 months back my Exhaust Emission light came on though there was no effect on the engine.

 

I finally got around to take it to the main dealer to look 3 weeks ago at and they fitted a new part and as a good will gesture as the yeti is a few months outside warranty Skoda paid 90% of the £350 bill

 

Now, yesterday I was looking to fit my new rear dashcam but when I went top remove the tailgate plastic cover to access the rear wiper electrics I found I could not under the Torx screws as I did not have a longer reach torx screwdriver, so I did nothing. I thought I would just plug the dashcam into the rear aux socket in boot.

 

I knew it would be on all the time but set it up to do motion detection and everything was working fine.

 

4 hours later I went to get into the Yeti but it failed to start, just very fast clicking sounds when turning the key and I thought what have I done??

 

I lowered the passenger window and noticed it was sluggish so presummed it was a low battery.

 

So I beckoned the kids to give me a push so I could bump start the diesel engine, A quick push and with the gear in 2nd I dropped the clutch and the diesel fired up, then I noticed the Exhaust Emission light come and it has stayed on since.

 

Does the exhaust emission thingy get damaged when bumping a diesel??

Does a flat battery produce this fast clicking sound when turning the key?? (sounds like a solenoid firing on and off)

 

Any other ideas before I take it back to the main dealer and hope not to pay the £350

 

As a side note I have unplugged the rear camera.

I can answer 1/2 of the question. Yes you do get that noise with a flat battery.

As regards the light, I am aware that a low voltage can trigger warning light faults which often out once voltage is back to normal. This sometimes only happens once the engine is turned off and then restarted.

I'm sure somebody more learned than me will give you a definitive answer soon.

I would expect a new battery would resolve it all.

It’d be my first step, in any case. 

 

Ps - I take it the + terminal is not corroded......in the old days a wiggle would sometimes resolve that question.

Well I measured the battery voltage and it was very good at 12.8vdc without engine running, with running it was 14.1vdc, so battery is good.

 

I went for a drive today and after 3 miles the Emissions light went off and has not come on again.

 

I just presume that bumping the car meant some unburnt fuel getting onto the sensor causing it to come on, then after a while of driving it eventually burnt off. Phew!!! saves a few pounds.

How and when did you take your first battery reading? A "resting" voltage is best taken before the car is started in the morning, or at least several hours after the car has been run.

The reading was taken first thing this morning (just before going off to the Supermarket to do the weekly shop), then I started the yeti and left it running and took the next voltage ready 2 mins later once everything had settled down.
