Warranties question

Featured Replies

A boring but important question. I'm looking to replace my current SII Superb with an SIII model in the new year. It is likely to be a 16, 66 or 17 plate. The main sources I have seen so far fall into two camps; main dealer and car supermarket (Motorpoint et al).

AIUI a main dealer car will be "Skoda Approved", whereas a car supermarket will offer only the rest of the manufacturer warranty. Is there actually a difference in reality? Does it make a difference to purchase or resale values? How do I use the "balance of the warranty" if I've bought from a car supermarket? And are the warranties worth having in the first place?

All views gratefully received.

With the Skoda Warranty if you buy a 6 month old car you get the remaining 2-1/2 years factory warranty. If the car is 2-1/2 years old you get 6 month Factory Warranty and 6 months skoda approved warranty ( 3rd Party warranty approved by Skoda ). If the car is out of warranty and you buy from Skoda you get 12 months Approved warranty. The approved warranty doesn't cover everything the Factory one does but you can pay extra to get full cover ( as I understand it )

+1 ^^^

Basic details of manufacturer's warranty and limitations can be read here. Ignore references to the service book, this is now online. There should be a very thin warranty booklet with the car's paperwork showing the applicable warranty.

Of note is that the basic manufacturer's 3 year warranty has both a 6 month or 6,500 mile 'wear and tear' clause and a 60,000 mile upper limit, something to consider if you opt for a high mileage used car.

If the original owner purchased a pre-delivery extended manufacturer's warranty with the car (up to five years) then that is transferred with the car to the next owner.

As for how you use the balance of manufacturer's warranty, you simply take it to a Skoda dealer/workshop. Warranty can be determined by any Skoda dealership using either the warranty booklet or from the VIN.

Many thanks for this. One final question if I may. Is it possible to purchase extended warranty after registration? Or can this only be done when ordering new?

Just to add I mean Skoda factory warranty rather than an after-market version.

The extended factory warranty can only be added ( 3 years to 5 ) before the car is registered  ( IIRC )
